One is PCI and one is USB so you can't compare them. I could only use one on my laptop.

Jasper, notice in the list we have M-Audio's SuperDAC, not the M-Audio Audiophile USB. But anyway, was your post a nomination for the E-MU 1212m in its price range?

Since it's "missing" from the nominees I thought I should nominate the Simaudio Moon Nova. It's the little brother of the Simaudio Eclipse, and in it's pricerange (I think it sells for just below $3000 in the US) I found none better when I was looking for sources recently.

Very musical (excellent timing), with good detail, excellent highs (extended, but never sharp) and good bass and mid. Imaging is not bad either, even if some of it's competitors did slightly better in this area.

It easily beats the nominated Naim CD5, and I found it hard to distingguish from the Naim CDX2.

A bare CDX2 would probably struggle amongst peers, now even more since it went up in pricing few weeks ago. ( that's why I did not nominate it as a stand-alone unit )

But adding on XPS2 is a whole different ball game.

that said, costlier the gear ( for digital, i'd say anything above 5k mark ), its performance is not necessarily better more of flavor differences amongst the units. A notion of the 'best' source becomes somewhat of a moot point.

Added it to both under $1600 and under $2000, because it can be purchased new for $1599.

Surprised that Cambridge Audio's Azur 640c doesn't appear on the list. I would say it belongs in the $500 category at the very least. I can't compare it to any other players in the higher brackets, so I'd have to leave that categorization to those who are able to make that judgement.

Ok added. Btw only know I realize we did have the M-Audio USB soundcard on the list, I had listed it without the brand name and did not spot it at first.

Thank you sir... now all we need to do is figure out where on that list the E-MU actually belongs...
