HDCD list
Feb 27, 2006 at 6:13 AM Post #301 of 595
I just became the proud owner of an HDCD-compatible player (Rotel RCD-971) and was thrilled to find your thread. I started searching and turned up a fairly comprehsive list of HDCD albums embedded in the CDUniverse.com site. There's no direct link in this site to sort for HDCD, but once you open a link to any HDCD album you can then click on the HDCD format link therein to turn up all 234 HDCD albums. By doing this you are directed to:
http://www.cduniverse.com/browsecat....cart=313612219

Many of the HDCD albums are already listed in this thread, but many more are not. A few of my Jazz favorites to add to the list:

Freedie Hubbard: Backlash
Farrell/Moreira/Purim: Threeway Mirror
Andy Narell: Fire in the Engine Room

By the way, our posted list includes a single album from artists when many more of their recordings from the 90's are in HDCD. These include (for some jazzy examples):

Keiko Matsui
Dave Koz

Lastly, for those of you avidly searching, one way to turn up HDCD albums is to search music vendor sites for "Enhanced" format. Keep in mind, not all Enhanced albums are HDCD and not all HDCDs are listed as Enhanced; but there is surely some overlap. I'm on the trail of dozens of Enhanced albums (from my favorite jazz artists) that I believe are HDCD and will list titles once I've acquired them and "seen the light".

Sleipner: thanks for the link to that catalog. I've included it as a link here.

HoselTone: Thanks for the contribution -- I've added a note to the two artists you mention saying that they have multiple other HDCD albums.

Sorry for the long turnaround on those. I've been out of town.

you can also add:

mannheim steamroller - CLassical Gas (marked hdcd)
mannheim steamroller - romantic melodies (marked hdcd)
mannheim steamroller - romantic themes (marked hdcd)

just an fyi to the people not sure how to find hdcd, the hdcd light as said before HAS to be on. just because a recording is well recorded and sounds "deep" doesn't mean it's an hdcd. i've heard several non-hdcd recordings that trump the detail of some of my hdcd collection just because of the way it was recorded. one good example is the harnoncourt circuit of beethoven's nine symphonies. the DDD recording put Story of the Year's hdcd recording to shame.

Just listened to this for the first time in a long while, and it's HDCD.

DJ Spooky Under The Influence

There is a very small HDCD logo on the package. This is a mix from 2001, and a good one at that. Sounds great. It's a mix, fairly all over the place (FSOL, Sonic Youth, Amon Tobin, Kool Keith, Sakamoto off the top of my head), but electronic would be the obvious place to put it.

Picked up Fleetwood Mac's "Live in Boston, Vol. 1" (Snapper Classics) at Tower last night. HDCD logo on front of digipak, but CD is not marked.

I've just ordered Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 online. Both are HDCD, so you could add those to the list, too.

If you like your electric blues British-style, I recommend this CD highly.

This is a remastered live recording from 1970 that features the early Mac line-up: Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, Jeremy Spencer, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood (i.e., pre-Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, and Christine McVie). I note this because there's a live CD/DVD set of a 2003 concert -- with Lindsey and Stevie -- called "Live in Boston."

I just received my new Denon dvd player and I've been going through some HDCD's that I've never been able to listen to before. I've got one here that states HDCD on the cover and the disc. It doesn't seem to be an HDCD at all.
It is Steve Winwood Junction Seven on Virgin with the catalogue number of 7243 8 44059 2 2 .

np. Joni Mitchell - Misses HDCD

wow great thread guys - wish i'd come across this back when i was avidly hunting hdcds
smily_headphones1.gif

i picked up a rotel hdcd player about 4 years ago, but right now i'm a few continents away from it. once i get back to it i'll post what HDCDs I have from my collection.

i do remember that a surprisingly large number of untagged Japanese releases showed up as HDCDs. upon further inspection they were mainly asian market releases - maybe when they went through the taiwanese factory they went through HDCD production as a matter of convenience ?

Depends on whether these are legitimate release or not. The titles I have listed and pictured earlier in this threads are all legit items from Asian division of the major music companies. There are also some local labels that release HDCD-encoded CD titles. However, HDCD has also became a "buzzword" for counterfeiters and they will produce HDCD-encoded pirate CDs as well. We shouldn't include those in this thread.

you saying i buy pirated goods ? them's fightin' words ...

i'll admit, in my youth, i bought a whole bunch of anime soundtracks that turned out to be taiwanese pirates, but I'm older and wiser now

the cds i was referring to were i believe, avex asia and jvc releases mainly. some albums i remember include, Ayumi Hamasaki - Rainbow, Do As Infinity - True Song and The Brilliant Green - The Winter Album. None were marked as HDCD, but registered as such on my Rotel.

Hats off to Megaptera and all for listing HDCDs! Now that Microsoft has pulled practically all HDCD information from their site, I'm glad to have found this thread. However, some more info may be needed, if not fact-checking; I raise this because I picked up two CDs from the list, looking forward to bask in HDCD splendor only to find they aren't HDCDs at all. The two discs are the Elgar Enigma Variations et al. (Seraphim CDE 7243 5 69022 2 0) and the Janos Starker Bach Suites for Solo Cello (RCA/BMG 09026-61436-2). I've tried playing these disks on two different HDCD players and various PCs with WMA 9 and 10, and although they do sound great, no HDCD indication showed up. The CDs I picked up have the exact product number posted in the listing. It's very possible that the discs might be HDCDs in the individual's home market (I'm in the United States), but usually record companies would post different product numbers and/or labels for different markets. I also picked up another CD - the Mel Torme London Sessions - only to find out later that the HDCD version found on the CD layer of the hybrid SACD reissue of that album! So, fellow HDCD supporters, please indicate the record label, the product code, and the perhaps country/market where the HDCD is from - the full disclosure can help individuals to get 'the real McCoy'!
