So I bought some slightly used HD650s and was enjoying them the other day, when I thought I'd remove the foam from inside the headphone. They've been tingling my ears (just a bit to close to my ear, and what are we saying, big ears?) when to my suprise....

The diaphragm on the speaker is clearly marked HD580. The headphone casing looks like HD650, as well as the stock cable, and the guy I bought them from provided me a HD650 receipt from J&R as well as all the original packaging, box, manual, etc.

Now I'm just left wondring... what the? Is this a nice counterfeit, or some fancy repackaging on Sennheiser's part? I'm obviously hoping the later.

Don't worry, it's the real thing. The metal mesh damping that Sennheiser introduced some time ago is used on HD650s only!
All other use velvet/paper like damping.

I bought two HD650 drivers to fit in one of my Jubilee housings and they look exactly like yours. In an A/B comparison they sounded exact like a "normal" looking HD650 just in case you were concerned about them sounding different because of the metal.

Don't wory nothing's wrong, there has been some threads about this you can do a search for it. If you find the big thread about it you can skip a lot of pages in that thread the answer is there somewhere in the end of the thread.

Yep they're exactly the same as my HD580's driver.

I don't know why people pay more money for the HD650 or HD600 when they have the same drivers as the HD580 so would probably sound the same...

They don't have the same drivers. You clearly have not heard the HD650.

they are different impedance, aren't they?

The material is the same - and maybe even the geometry - but the rest of the driver is at least a little different.

580 vs. 600 is another story - they are the same.

That's a photo of the drivers in my HD580. They might not be the same but they look the same.

ok, they're both 300 ohm, but the hd650 is advertised as being 6db more sensitive. So something changed - even if it's just the magnet strength and the venting on the back of the driver.

I don't dispute that the design of the HD580 and HD650 is nearly identical: why mess with something that works? But just because the plastic housing looks the same doesn't mean the driver is the same. Heck, the aperture on Grado's all look the same, does that mean SR60=RS1? No.

Just odd to see the driver being specifically labeled HD580. Glad to hear no worries though. Apparently a can of worms. (I'll exit stage left)

As for m00hk00h's comment about the HD650 metal mesh dampening being unique... Isn't that the same metal mesh seen in Fraseyboy's HD580s?
