HD600-accurate and intimate does everything well..
HD650-Warm and intimate, fantastic mids, and an addictive tone..
HE-400 Expansive instrument separation, crisp and a bit dark at the same time, excellent bass layering, probably the most "fun" of the mentioned.
HE-500 A refined version of the HE-400 that does everything well, not the fun factor of the HE-400 but very close, best treble response I have heard as of yet.
The hd-598 is a good can for the price, but not on the same levels as the others listed. Fearless1 gave a good general description of each, and I agree with him.
The HD650 and He-400 are very complimentry to each other. The 650 is fantastic with classic, rock blues and acoustic whereas the He-400 slams with EDM, Hip Hop and Jazz.
Also many will undoubtedly prefer 650. IMO to really appreciate the 650 for its sound signature, you ought to listen to the hd600's. It immediately makes appearant how beautiful it really is. In my experience the 600 is a little more revealing but its sound signature is in no way as appealing as the 650's. The smoothness and sense of refinement that shines through with the 650's is not something the 600 ever approaches.
I do see how some may prefer the 600's signature, if only purely for its reference quality, but really, the 650 has much of what makes the 600's great while additionally also having a much more beautiful sound going for it, in my opinion.
In audio, I often feel that the things that stand out are not the differences, but the huge amounts of similarities you happen upon when listening to various stuff. The difference in the 600/650's sound signature however, is one of those things that you may find to be surprisingly noticable.
But like I said, it might take listening to the 600 to really understand what makes the 650's sound signature so appealing. Even then, you might not agree you prefer it. Although I think you would, unless the observation that the 650 is more colored is something you find objectionable as a matter of principle. In that case, I would wonder why you owned a 650 in the first place, though .
