Hey, I've decided I'll buy a pair of headphones, and I was looking for some clear sounding with good soundstage. The two I'm left with is the HD579 and the SRH840. The reason I wan't to get the HD579 is because of the soundstage, I've heard it's very small on the SRH. The reason I want to get the SRH is because of the clear vocals. Are they much clearer than the HD579? I like the frequency response of the HD's too ( flat with slight emphasis on treble ). Could anyone help me out in some way? :)

Open headphones and closed headphones tend to sound noticeably different. I prefer open as it sounds more natural to my ears, and so I recommend HD 579 over Shure SRH840 (which are excellent closed cans for the price, though) for that reason. Also, the comfort on the HD 5 series is SUPERB, I had the HD 518 and still have the HD 558, and the HD 579 are very similar to the HD 558.

I would say in absolute terms it is pushing up against bright but without sibilance. The mids are good with some slight upper-mid compression. The low end is tight and controlled. That's how I hear it, anyway. It is a nice-sounding headphone and it does compare fairly favorably to the more expensive 599 (though the big brother has a more refined high end, IMO).
