Utopia dynamics comes from Forward mids AKA small soundstage. These 2 cant never go hand in hand.
Try to eq HD800S from 1.5khz to 4hz and you will see how dramatically it will change.
Thanks for the photos. Do you know if there is any additional extension with the new posts over the old ones? I could have used one more click to get the ear cup in just the right position.

Pics are misleading it's not really gold. It's more of like a silvery tan. Looks awesome in person. The pics where the gold looks 14k yellow gold must have been mighty contrast boosted cause it looks nothing like that in person.

Yeah take a look at the pic I posted above. Depending on the angle you look at it, it either looks tan or silver. You can see the driver at an angle looks silver in that pic, but the straght-on angle post looks tan. Its really neat, like one of those cars that changes hue depending angle in the sun.
So I got my own pair yesterday at Sennheiser SF. As always, they were unbelievably courteous and nice. (I also was the first one there to get an HD 820 and I’ve spent a fair amount of time listening to the HE-1 there — they even hand you a fancy Scotch to sip!).
Anyway, to those collectors that are fanatical about stuff like which number to get, I was able to determine the limited edition numbers of the 12 (now 11) units they had (in 3 large boxes with 4 units apiece inside). They are as follows: 28-31, 95-98, and 163-166. I find it curious that the numbered sets are totally unrelated to each other. All arrived in the same shipment to the Sennheiser SF store and the workers couldn’t understand it either.
By the way, the color is gorgeous. I was a bit apprehensive from the internet pics but they look much better in person. Limited edition silver numbered plate should have been the same color, though!
Lol Sennheiser might be doing some sneaky tuning on it. The fact that they commented makes me think maybe Senny corporate overlords are watching so they want to keep it on dl. Lol
I’m pretty sure protoss got one so we shall see more impressions as well.
Of course we're watching, but "Overlords" may be a bit of hyperbole.
Protoss would be a good choice for a headphone review, and we look forward to what he has to say.
...we tried sending a past headphone to the Zerg, but a Zergling got it in it's mouth and ran away with it before a proper impression could be formed.
Loving the responses, community helping out the community! Thanks @Whitigir and @ruinedx!
At the end of the day, THAT is the goal!

Haha No offense! Hopefully non taken. I have a wild imagination and love expressing it.
Patients is key right now. Some measurements and impressions might be helpful.
HD540 Reference Gold (early production) is my favorite headphone of all time. Who ever was behind the scenes engineering at the time was incredibly talented. If I was to criticize it more dynamics would do the trick with a bit larger soundstage. I'd have myself one of those and be a happy camper.
Speaking of camper... Tyll deserves a HD800SA
lol or he might have one reserved already.
Got mine in today, 104/750. As mentioned by others, the color is even nicer in person! Sound is great as expected and as a sucker for collectors items, I'm very happy to have this version of the headphones. The HD 800 holds a special spot in my equipment collection—certainly one of, if not the, most important and influential headphones in my audio history. I had been thinking about picking up a set of HD 800 S recently and then I saw this Anniversary Edition come up so it's basically two birds with one stone, glad I waited!
A bit disappointed that the presentation seems to be a slight step down from when I got my original HD 800, for instance the cables aren't branded with Sennheiser on the plugs or y-split anymore. Not really a big deal.
More disappointing for me is that there seem to be paint defects on my brand new set. I wonder, has anyone else seen this with theirs?
They're all relatively small, but it does bring the excitement down. Also interesting is that all flaws are on the right side, the left side is perfect.
