Would that be the darker color drivers?  Older ones.

That's what you would think, but I'm not sure. My drivers have a black plastic framework with white small areas where white shows through on the top and bottom. I had two other HD600s that did not agree with me because of sharpness yet these do.

I used to have a HD580 and I could listen to them for hours and hours. I tried AKG 701 for a while, kinda liked its bigger soundstage but I found it a bit fatiguing. So later I sold the 701 and 580 was destroyed in a fire. I have had Beyer DT 235 for a year now. But recently I moved to an office so I have been considering the open type headphones again. I listen to classical music (mostly instruments) and occasionally use to it watch movies. I have done quite an amount of search here and have read reviews on DT880, AKG 501/701, but it seems that every time it would go back to the Sennheiser. LOL! So maybe I will get them next. I guess 600 for music and 650 for movies?

I think you're agonizing over it too much. They're closer to each other than they're different. Get a 650 if you have an amp that's capable of driving it right, otherwise get a 600. Use a retailer with a good return policy in case you don't like it. That's all there is to it really.

Better still, get the original Omega 2 and forget about both.

I have made up mind to get the HD 650 and Nuforce icon HDP pre-amp at about $800 (see if there will be a price drop be the end of the year). I am going to listen it while it's playing to see how the burning-in progress to feel the difference. One thing not clear is about the cable. How good or inferior the stock cable is on the HD 650? Is it really necesary to replace it? If I need to replace it I will need one about 16-18 feet due to the distance between my coach and the the TV and HT set up. Any recpmmendations?

The stock cables are decent, but custom made cables are better. I would not worry about upgrading cables just yet. Listen to the HD650's first, burn them in, and absorb the sound signature. If you feel as though you are not content, then think about replacing the cables. Although, a 16-18 foot custom cable will probably cost you more than $200, unless you can solder and make the cable yourself.

Wow, $200. I guess I would be quite happy

with the icon DHP and HD 650 combo for a few years. This is not cheap to me. I guess I will try to extend my neck as giraffe when I sit on the coach.

For a 16 to 18 foot custom made cable, you may want to consider selling a kidney.

i love my hd 650s. definitely not neutral, but very enjoyable and relaxing. they don't sound anywhere near veiled to me and i love their warm sound signature.

the bass is great for me, perfect balance of punch, boom, and slam. tight when it needs to be and also nice and deep, sounds like a real subwoofer

the mids are great and the highs while rolled off a bit, are still decent.

Just placed order on HD 650, $319.95 at amazon. Also ordered Icon HDP which will come a little later. So I really can experience how HD 650 "sucks" without the help of amp. I do have a receiver (at least 7 year old Onkyo HT 520 from HTIB, $500 7 years ago).

Yes, same driver. They use different materials in construction. Drivers are closer/further from ear/etc.
