I also heard that Earsonics SM3 have a sound signature in the same mold but they are hard to drive. Not sure if there’s a comparo between HJE or W3 and SM3.

SM3 hard to drive?  Uh, not at all.  Easy, peezy, lemon squeezee.

That's cool. Any sonic details about SM3 vs HJE vs W3?

Interesting in this 'high end' source as well hope it's a Cowon.

I think it's more the recording than anything. Using my bad sources there was only lots of sibilance when the recording was bad and the same for my better sources. I probably wouldn't call a Cowon a high end source however :)

Different opinions, I would call Cowon a high end source anyday, wonder what his is going to be.

Edit: Looking at his albums it 'appears' to be a J3 I wonder....

I have 3 sources

1. line6 dac usb 24 96 sound - very clean sounding- use it with my Stax as well

2. Cowon J3 - next clean sounding

3. Rockboxed clip+ :) kinda whatever sounding , but still good

Only with the clip do i get some high weird stuff,

I havent even foam modded my pannas yet either ,

Mostly flac, some wav & mp3 320's

- I have owned an SM3, but bought the HJE900 to replace it when i broke it. I preferred the SM3 to the HJE900, but its all down to the sound signature that you prefer.

Mid-centric VS recessed mids, more balanced freq. reponse VS more fun sound sig, great isolation VS vented.

PS: i took the filters out from my SM3 and they sounded a lot better IMO

I think I'm used to more fun sound signatures.
What about the clarity, soundstage, details between the 2?

- clarity-wise i would prefer the SM3, to my ears of course. But if a fun sound sig is what you are looking for, then you might be better off with the HJE900 (=

EDIT: i was quite underwhelmed by the flatter response of the SM3 when i first got it, but as i listened to it longer, i begun to appreciate how the flatter sound sig... for example the drums are not constantly being accenuated throughout the song due to probably the bumped up low end, allowing you to be engaged with the performance of the band as a whole, better. This is how i felt when i moved to the SM3.

What genres do you listen to?
