Great Rock Albums!

The thing with the Woodstock recording is that it sounds really bad. You'd need a really forgiving setup to listen to it more than once. I find the video more palatable as it's distracting... CSN, Hendrix, Joan B... the  mud... Must've been something else being there! I was just 1 year old...

Similar as in almost as close I'd rate the closing of the Live Aid act with Dylan and the Stones. Man!!! If that ain't Rock I don't know what is.

I understand my listing will turn out quite extensive, but it's something I want to do. I still read threads from the early days of HF so maybe there's others like me down the line that when searching for great sounding rock recordings, they'll have a one spot reference from where to start or simply to move on further. In the end, I'll list my favorite top 10-20 but I guess it'll be redundant as most of them will surely already be listed by then.

Not just a thought...a great one! I'm surprised that one hasn't been mentioned. Hendrix was amazing!

Glad you Agree!

Yeah, I think It was one of the first 5 albums I owned as a teenager. The Doors first LP and Days of the Future Passed (Moody's) were among those as well.

Yeah, I have a "remastered" CD version too that seems a bit better. If most young teenagers are like my daughter then they typically don't pay attention to quality of recordings much. Yet, I have been successful in that she's into Hendrix and Van Halen plus has the Beatles' Abbey Road poster on her wall.

I see we've got most of the mainstream bands covered, so let's dig a little deeper.

Here's some of my favorite underplayed bands from the era of my first post:

1) Spirit - Great combination of psychedelia, jazz, driving guitar, and intelligent lyrics. If you like Steely Dan, you'll probably like Spirit

2) Steeleye Span - Traditional English folk music updated with heavy electric guitar and bass. Works surprisingly well. Some of the best female vocals (Maddy Prior) you will ever hear.

3) Youngbloods - Try the achingly beautiful "Darkness, Darkness" or "Get Together". Hard to think of two other songs that so perfectly encapsulate the era.

4) The Rascals - Best "blue-eyed soul" you will ever hear. Look for a "You Tube" video of "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore". Perhaps the only white group to play the Apollo theater in Harlem and bring the house down.

5) Hot Tuna - Serious musicianship side of Jefferson Airplane. Great low key live performance in a small club.

6) Thirteenth Floor Elevators - Hard driving psychedlia out of Texas in 1967??? - You bet!

7) Love - One of the finest and least played bands of the early "Flower Power" era. Also one of the first truely integrated bands.

8) Fleetwood Mac - The earlier (pre-Stevie Nicks) incarnation with Peter Green when they were an English working- class blues-rock band

9) Steve Miller - Before he was a "Pop Star" he was a pretty good psychedelic-blues guitarist with some interesting lyrics. Check out "Living in the USA" with heavy guitar backed lyrics like: ....."Politicians!...Wariticians!...Television!....Somebody get me a cheeseburger!" Unfortunately some things never change.

10) It's a Beautiful Day" - I listed this one before but I'll list it again because I have a little bit of a personal connection to the band ( one of the female singers once saw me on the side of the road with a broken down motorcycle, stopped and offered a ride). Imagine pastoral San Francisco "hippie" music done on a large scale with superb vocals and a lead electric violin. Try "White Bird" and see if you agree with me that it still holds up surprisingly well.
