Grace Design x Massdrop m9XX DAC/Amp Review: First Impressions

Oops.
I think I might have just bought a pair of Stax SR-507 headspeakers.
Does this amp have enough juice to run these properly?

Has nothing to do with power, the m9XX isn't even the right type of amp. It literally won't work at all, as in you won't even be able to plug your headphones into it. You need an electrostatic amp.

Thanks mate.
I know I need a Stax "energizer" or adapter, but these (can) plug in between the amp and the headphones.
I now know I need an amp that puts out considerably more than the Grace unit.

Oh yeah, if you're using an energizer you need an amp that outputs at least 5-8 watts, which discounts all but a handful of amps. Energizers are really made to be used with speaker taps more than normal headphone amps. You're much better off just getting an electrostatic amp. Energizers are mostly for people who already happened to own a speaker amp and didn't want to buy an expensive electrostatic amp as well. If you're building a system from scratch you're way better off just doing it right.

...and with the HE400i?

I would say I'm mostly between 60 and 70-75.
With some "quiet" records I get over 80, but that's only very seldom.

Also, I've got the impression that I'm getting such pleasure out of the M9XX that I don't feel the need to crank the volume excessively high.

It sounds ridiculously good and full of details even at low-ish volumes. I feel  no need for loudness, except when I get in headbanging mood

I was typically doing about 55 for the X00 and about 65 for the 400i. On the Nighthawk, usually 53.5. No EQ, CF Off and F2 for all.

  Thanks for that.
Do you have the gain on the Grace set to 90?
I saw somewhere that's what is recommended to use it as a DAC only.

I have a Stax SRM-717, which has an internal switch to bypass its volume control. I enabled that switch, so that I can use the volume control on the m9XX. As far as I know, only the 717 and the 727 have that switch; other Stax amps do not have that 'power amp' feature. I would indeed set the gain on the Grace to 90 in that case.

Should be one or two weeks. It's not that limited.

I need to go around 80 for my k7xx. Perhaps it's true what they say about AKG.
