The Apex AD600A DVD player uses an IDE interface between the transport and the rest of the player. People have reported being able to use Toshiba DVD-ROM drives (a few years back) to replace the stock drive in case of failure.

There's absolutely no reason the same thing couldn't be attempted with a CD-ROM drive. In fact, the overwhelming likelihood is that it already has.

EDIT: Actually, check a link above in this thread for an example of someone doing it with one of the NEC's.

look for an art dio ... sometimes on audiogon.com for under 150 then send it in to get modded at boldercables.com ...

A little while ago, the ART DI/O was selling for under $100 at fullcompass.com. That price may still be good.

You can also just call fullcompass.

ART DI/O is like a gem. It's supposed to be used for pro audio recording use. It's hard to believe something that cheap can provide that level of quality. That's why there's a cult following

There are also a host of known modifications that greatly enhance its performance.

Best bet is to call fullcompass. The DI/O was rarely on their website.

The DI/O is truely an excellent piece. I'm enjoying my modded DI/O with custom power supply at the moment and much prefer it over my very dry sounding 555ES.
