The catalog isn't that deep, but run a search for rock albums over at The Super Audio CD | SA-CD | SACD Reference.

The vast majority of them are hybrids so you'll be able to play them on a Red Book player or rip them.

There are a few exceptions, but SACDs tend to have great mastering and production values. The rock SACDs I have sound amazing for the most part - DSoTM has never sounded better.

If you get the itch to hear the Scarlet Book layer, the Sony SCD-CE595 is a true bargain. I got a refurb for about $60. They're not the last word in resolution, but are good enough to hear the benefits of SACD.

Lot of the RUSH albums are well-produced/mixed/mastered IMHO .
Lot of the prog. rock of yesteryear and current day .

"Ozric Tentacles" , a British psychedelic-prog. rock band is worth listening to .

A lot of the more recent Grateful Dead and Phish and Moe albums(particularly live-recorded stuff) is very good ... all three bands seem to have an interest good sound ...
The current "The Dead" tour shows are being released after every show online in mp3 and FLAC format ... they sound really really good ....

Mark Lanegan's solo albums are good stuff and sound good ...his voice recorded/mic'd very well ... (he was in the Seattle rock band "The Screaming Trees" as well as Queens of the Stone Age and a couple other short-term projects ...

anybody get arctic monkeys' live dvd? how's the sound quality?

they are notorious for the compressed album mixes, but the dvd might as well be the savior.

recently i bought aerosmith's best collection and it sounds pretty good though not stellar.

am looking forward to ripping my long gone RHCP slane castle dvd, such a great performance, and a rejuvenating sound to hear RHCP songs! californication is really painful on the ears.

guys,

I am really looking for a good recording on Aerosmith's MTV Unplugged show. They really rock. Anybody knows whether there is any recording available? A DVD release perhaps? Bootleg CD?

And what's the word on the new Rolling Stones remasters?

I don't think some of these cd's qualify as " hard rocking" but they are rock:

1. The Verve, Urban Hymns(I never enjoyed/liked/loved this cd until I bought the ATH-ES7)
2. Liz Phair, Exile in Guyville(remastered edition)
3. Alanis Morissette, Jagged Little Pill
4. Bad Brains, Banned in DC(a compilation album)
5. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Baby 81/Howl
6. Husker Du, The Living End
7. At the Drive In, Relationship of Command

I bought The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers remaster. Very good sounding. And they write this inside the sleeve:

"Produced, with affection, by Jimmy Miller.

A bit of advice from Jimmy M.: Maximum cycle characteristics and frequency response at high decibel level have been set according to standards suggested in the GUY STEVENS Producer Manual, chart R-357, in index, page 304. These recommended standards were compiled by the same authority having recently measured audible damage created by supersonic aircraft- if for any reasons you do not agree with the standards- turn it up."

the war to end the loudness war had been declared!
