What was the verdict on the Aviot ZX1’s?
Still $330 on Amazon. Some say they are heavy, I’ve seen from 6.5 to 8 grams (TWS), with overall packaging at 10.6 oz, around 300 grams.. This has an aluminum case, but that seems weighty, maybe a larger case battery.. Really nice looking…

They might be heavy but they stay so well on your ears that you'll barely notice them, they seem considerably lighter in practice than they are on paper.

I am not too sure if my scale works correctly but it shows them at 7.39 each

They deserve a seat at the TOTL table.

So, as I continue my learings on earbuds and I found what I like, I thought I would play around with IEM's - I have an old pair of Westone W40s hiding somewhere in my house... but they're currently living in a secret dimension and refusing to be found along with some missing socks.

So, I asked Chat GPT to give me IEM's that sound like the Rex5 and Beoplay Elevens. It made a cool map and gave me this summary
Quick read:

  • Penon Serial and Beoplay Eleven = pure lush, emotional magic 🎯
  • SoftEars Volume, Mangird Tea 2, QoA Aviation, and Mega5-EST = beautifully warm and musical, but each with slightly different technical edges
  • AVIOT TE-ZX1 and Rex5 = more technical, energetic, slightly less cuddly

Big picture:
If you love the Beoplay vibe, you’ll be very happy living anywhere in that upper-middle to top-right cluster! 🎧💕

Now that I've had the Pi8s long enough for some impressions, these are really growing on me. The sound is so accurate. I've read and seen videos stating there is little to no bass, I just do see how that is possible. I have it on True sound and there is plenty of bass. The sound is so smooth and detailed. I've tried messing with the eq but really like it the way the true sound is which I belive is flat.

One thing I noticed is the volume on the earbuds has a lot more steps up and down then my phone which makes it easier to find my right volume. The fit is great, I can easily wear these all day. Can't wait for the AZ100s to show up in a few days to compare.

I'll be interested to see what you think. I thought they were pretty similar, but the Pi8 had a bit more detail in the sound, with the app not as good as the AZ100.

True Sound mode really shines on the Pi8s. The extra volume steps are a game-changer too. Curious to see how you find the AZ100s in comparison!

Anyone read reviews about the new B&W Px7 s3s? Everyone says they are amazing, a whole new level of sound and top tier ANC. And guess what, they are not for sale in the US.

Then again, according to a new executive order, we are all supposed to be wearing these

Was obsessing over this and could never really tell a difference listening to my desktop setup vs iFi go pods and felt I was missing out being limited to an iPhone on the go.

Found this post by Archimago on AAC vs LDAC
https://archimago.blogspot.com/2023/08/part-ii-comparison-of-bluetooth.html?m=1

tl;dr - newer implementations of AAC over Bluetooth are equally “good” or better than LDAC > 900kbs and better than aptX. He has a nice frequency response graph. I don’t know if anyone has tested this on newer MacBooks but at the time of the writing, the iPhone 14 Pro didn’t have any rolloff until actually very close to 20khz and the dynamic range was precise across frequencies.

For me, the AZ100 is clearly superior to the Pi8, in every way.

1) AAC is not better than LDAC or basic aptX, it only sound as good as it can be on Apple devices as that is all they use so they spend time tweaking it.

On Windows and Android is is not the best implemented it is just another codec.

2) The AZ100 like the AZ80 before them are overrated and overhyped IMO and now some are coming out the woods and saying so, they both were returns for me mainly but not solely due to the SQ.

I have not heard the Pi8 and would not buy them due to battery life and lack of controls but I cannot imagine the AZ100 sound better.

I didn't say the Pi8s suck, I simply said that compared to the AZ100s they are inferior: in terms of sound quality (high frequencies not up to par and scratchy), unstable bluetooth connection, unfinished app, almost no software updates, etc. I have had both the Pi8s and the AZ100s. I was sad to return the AZ100s, but not the Pi8s. Obviously every ear and taste is different from everyone else's.
