Giant killers?

the beyer dt660 is more detailed than anything i've heard. by a lot. makes my denon d2000 and technica a900 seem tame in the mids and highs. a bargain for its price- about 120$

Team Ortho could probably name some very obscure stuff that beats the pants off the competition with some light modding, but that's an area I've yet to venture into.

K340s can be giant killers but they are in general hit and miss. Pairs can be found in varying condition, there are multiple versions, and lots of pairs have been modded in ways that are detrimental to their sound quality. Still I had a bass-light pair that for $200 pretty much blew most things under $1k out of the water.

But the real winner to me is the Stax SR-003. Pair it with the right amp and this tiny headphone will put out sound that will make a lot of big names very very embarrassed.

While the GS-1000 is on a higher level than the SR60, heck, even the SR225, I would say the SR60 is a true value. It doesn't kill any of the higher end Grados though, no way.

The Senn HD600 I would agree is so much better than it's price. Ray Samuels continues to think it's the best headphone ever made, better than his R10s and the HD800 to his ears.

I understand where he comes from, because it is a great headphone but fell short for me in engagment (and a few other areas), but I would say if that doesn't bother you, they can truly be way above their price.

Lately, the Phonak PFEs have shown me how engaging, accurate, and fast something for $130 can be. It's one of the best sounds in the headphone world only limited by it's smaller IEM sound. The only upgrade I would consider would be the UE11.

Also, picking up a used Melos SHA-1 for $400 (modified) gave me a very good preamp and a top level headphone amp. Definitely a giant killer but only found used.

I guess by extension, your HD280 utterly destroy the D5000 and K701 too then.

When you get to 1000+ USD for a headphone, im willing to bet theres a number of electrostatic setups that outperform them for a similar price.

No, since I am back to preferring the DT770 over those.

(bait eating mode)
Well good to know that you like such cheap headphones then.
(end bait eating)

The people who own KH-K1000s seem to like them a lot, moreso than some 'spensive ones.

They are not "cheap" headphones, they are extremely good headphones that just happen to be relatively affordable. Not at all the same thing.

IMO the DT48 a/e beats the pants off the 701/650/SA5000/DT770/DT880/990 in many critical areas. You can find used between 60-150. They sound different then most headphones. Geard towards a niche group of audiophiles. A true love or hate headphone. Eric has compared them favorably to the K1000 and HP2. Neutral timbre and mid range.

Aren't the DT48 more expensive than all but the SA5000?

many people say the GS1000 needs to be "properly amped." Ive heard them, as well as the SR60, through a B22 and a Woo6. the SR60 have a fuller midrange and an improved soundstage - thats right, the supposedly "immense soundstage for a grado" of the gs1000, in my experience, is a hoax. the gs1000 sounded thin all around, though it certainly was clearer in the upper register, and extended a BIT lower than the SR60.

that pretty much sums up how I perceive their differences, and in the end, if I had to spend a few hours listening to music through either can, I'd choose the SR60 for every genre

Hmm...

I would disagree; however, I haven't listened to the SR60's in too long a time. It's nice the 60's work so well for you, though. Money saved.

Ch-chang.

Maybe to those who value cost above actual sound quality. If I had an unlimited budget, I might find something that sounds better. Then again, there is a good chance that I might not!

In a blindfolded group test, I guarantee that the 770s would frequently be chosen above many far more expensive phones.

I haven't been impressed with the 770/80... I've tried it on a number of occasions.

However, the 250 ohm version is quite a bit better, surprisingly.
