It saddens me to hear about your hearing loss. Hopefully in the near future there will be a technology that will allow you to hear again. My brother lost the hearing in one ear, so I know the mental toll.

I hope you can get some relief from the buzzing and or ringing.
#779 here
I've seen people using brass polish on plastic scratches to smooth them completely out, not sure if that works on wood varnish or whatever this is...
That will become rubbed effect finish, just like satin finish ( non-glossy )

You speak from experience, or just making an assumption?

Im in the boat coating industries. Anything with abrasion applied will become non-glossy.

Mine finally arrived yesterday, 2 days after estimated date. I haven't ranted on DHL for a few days so I'll just say it again...DHL sucks, Stop it Massdrop!
Anyway, I have serial #206 and they have bubble wrap swirls. It took me a while to see them so I'm not going to bother trying to make them perfect. I have a little experience with woodworking and also automotive refinishing so I have a few pointers to offer the guys that have a problem with their Purplehearts:
1. Wait another month or so to see how the finish changes. Sometimes these finishes will continue to off gas for a while and the swirls could possibly fade.
2. One more vote for NOT using acetone on these!
3. If you must sand then 1500-3000 grit wet sand is your best bet. This finish appears to be pretty thin and you could cut through it pretty easily. I'd probably try a random orbital polisher on these before any wet sanding. You'd have to do this after sanding also to get out all the microscratches. - however if you do ANY of this you would want to completely disassemble the headphones as wet sanding and polishing can be messy. You don't want to end up with little splatters on the headband or earpads.

You should not have to do anything on a 400+ dollar headphone. It's quite outrageous, especially considering the Fostex heritage.
Its either a quality control issue or a bad batch of varnish which doesn't shown before they are packed.

Sorry, I know it doesn't help, but I find that funny.

I have another issue with the headphones, though its not really visible from the outside. Any idea what this might be??
For the love of taking things apart, I opened mine up and found the same white crap inside. I scraped it lightly and it came off (photos 2, 3).
Has anyone screwed the cup off? The screwdriver I've got is too small and the screws too tight, I'll just strip them if I try. Gonna bring my iFixit kit to work tomorrow.

$450, 3 months wait. Shotty QC, Crappy Deliver service. I think Massdrop may lose a few future customers.

And not a word from Massdrop. One must infer that they are working with Fostex and will soon announce a remedy and/or partial refund.
