Sounds like the 400i cable, I really believe it has to deal a lot with the protection of the cable form interference. Just a theory, What If you took that POS cable that came with the 650's and rewrapped that wiring with something like UL VW-1 PET Braided Sleeving and then put a ferrite bead on both ends of the cable. Would it sound better?
I don't think it was an interference issue because it sounded like junk even when I tried it with a turntable with a tube amp. Also it sounds dull, not noisy. Like it has a 8-11kHz filter built in or something. Which is particularly problematic because the HD650 is very gentle and smooth already at 8-11kHz (i.e. The infamous Sennheiser veil) and the cable makes it even worse.
I actually think the HE400i cable is very good sounding, though I agree that it's way too stiff.
