Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

The SMC connectors don't require any cutting but by the look of the 2.5mm on the new Massdrop image it looks like the jack is on the outer side of the frame.

I don't believe there is a kit, looked around a little on the Emu site and couldn't find anything

I recall seeing them available for EMU owners on Massdrop so I'm inquiring if they are available for all. I realize the body of the connector is outside the headphone body, but this seems to be a nice solution if you want plug in connectors without possibly having to modify the cups or headphone frame. I know you really like the SMC connectors but I'd like something compatible with the 400i.

are you perchance talking about the upgrade detachable cables for the teak that massdrop had? if so, I don't believe it was a kit, but an upgrade option for $50.

Edit: i can't even find the teaks without the removable cables anymore they seemed to have just edited its original page.

I don't remember seeing it as a kit but as the latest version of the Emu Teak with removable cables, like how the new TH-610 has removable cables (they went with HD-600/650 type w/ reversed polarity compared to Senn)

Do they sound different? Made of different materials?

They're made from the same protein leather and feel exactly the same. The only difference is the wider opening for your ear. I couldn't hear any difference between them and the stock pads, but keep in mind that I didn't listen critically. I think I remember @Eudis saying that the 610 and stock pads measured almost identically.

Yep, that's the "kit". Sorry, poor choice of wording.

Edit: I recall Chan having a kit available for previous Teak owners who missed the removable cabe version. I thought they were essentially selling the parts to mod the headphones to a detachable cable.

Not a kit but the how the headphone is made now with the removable cable as standard per the Massdrop page:

Anybody happen to know if a new drop is happening for these soon? I got to audition the 610 and 900 over the weekend and I'm in love. Need to get some Fostex in my life.

i couldn't say how soon, but i've been watching these, they are on my list as well, and it seemed like the drops were pretty frequent. there may be some sweet offers in the classifieds too, if you're ok with buying used.

Haha yeah, I just got the email as well.

Before I go ahead and buy these mahoganies, I was wondering if other users could rank the mahogany, ebony and PH alongside the 610 and 900? Just looking for personal opinions.

I installed SMC connectors on my set and I had to modify the baffle and cups. If I didn't do a little trimming and filing the cups wouldn't sit flush to the frame.

The cups don't normally sit flush to the frame, there is a small gap which is used to vent the cups.  You do need to solder at a right angle and depending on the SMC connector you use may need to file down the center pin but you should not have to mod the cups.

This is the SMC connector I use: https://vetco.net/products/smc-female-chassis-mount-connector

These SMC connectors will work but you will need to mod the cups: http://www.lunashops.com/goods.php?id=5056, http://www.lunashops.com/goods.php?id=4313

I did use the second ones you listed. I had to file a small notch into the cup for it to sit evenly.
