Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

For those looking for the new TH900 mkII, they have it on sale for an incredible price of only $999 on Adorama. I've ordered from them in the past without any problems, so I trust them as a seller.

Now, saving those pennies for a Focal Utopia...hopefully the bass will not be a letdown.

The TH900's bass is already +10-15 dB over the mid range. 10 dB is perceived as double the loudness. Adding another 10 dB is quadruple the loudness. If the SZ2000's treble is rolled off or recessed, maybe you're able to get away with it for your needs. I don't think the TH900 is the headphone for your needs.

The TH900 bass being overpowering to many is due to that +10-15 dB rise over the mid range. A lot of other mid-fi to TotL headphones roll off in the deepest bass regions. When they don't, they're pretty linear Planars like Audeze or Hifiman (depending on model). They're in line with the mid range or have a little roll off like MrSpeakers Ether/C. That roll off meaning they're lower level (-dB) than the mid-range.

Trying to give you reference and perspective here compared to the extreme bass thread.

The th900 i have certainly are not twice as loud in the low end than the mids. Boosting the low freq is what actually makes it sound the way you are describing it. Otherwise, there is almost no impact, and the low end sounds on par with the mids, while the treble is too loud.

The set is manufacturer rebrubished supposedly, and was complete.

Well, apart from the SZ2000, do you perhaps have/ tried other cans that you find have the type of bass you are looking for?  Perhaps this will help put things into perspective?

@bigbeard - the fr measurements show that the mids are recessed and that the bass is accentuated as socks mk2 has explained. the th900's reputation for being a totl can with a prodigious capability for bass reproduction is well established (just like its denon predecessors).

the majority of subjective impressions in this thread align with the objective measurements. your subjective impressions are at odds with both, for reasons that we can only speculate about (faulty headphone, personal preference/expectations, impaired hearing etc) without actually hearing your th900 for ourselves.

what's beyond doubt is that you are extremely disappointed with the th900's bass performance. that's unfortunate and unusual, but ranting about it isn't going to solve your problem. your options are pretty clear - return it for a replacement or a refund.

I don't believe i am ranting, it is more that i want to arrive at an objective truth; this will help me decide if they should go back because i overestimated them, or, if i should replace the unit since it may be defective somehow, though, it seems unlikely.

I don't believe you are ranting either but i do agree, your options are pretty clear. Is there really anything more to discuss about the issue at this point

Great price! I picked up my MK II for $1000 also, but I had to get them used to score that deal. So $1000 for new is about as good as it gets for these and I definately think they are worth it.

Speaking of the Utopia I just got in on TTVJ loaner program for them so super excited to compare them with some of my other cans (LCD-3, HE1000, Ether C, TH900)

That's great to hear, goldendarko. Please let us know how the Utopia fares against the TH900, in your opinion.

Fantastic!  Congrats on getting into the TTVJ loaner program.  I too would be interested in hearing about the Utopia.  I wonder how they compare to the TH900?

then you could start by looking at the objective measurements. the innerfidelity and golden ears sites are useful resources.

thanks to all of you, for your opinions. I posted in the extreme bass head, two videos, of my th900. Compare the impact there to the video in the original post. My post is on the last page - latest post.
