Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

My question remaining is, wheather you guys think that the DAC in the Asus Xonar STX is sub-highend (the amp is as we established) and wheather it is a good investment to look for a different DAC to source the V200 (and the TH900).

Invest in a decent standalone DAC or DAC / Amp combo.

Do some reasearch on http://us.marantz.com/us/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=HiFiComponents&ProductId=HDDAC1 or http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/products/HP-A8C.shtml

Both offer a good value and have a strong following.  Great way to get a taste of the higher end without breaking the bank (just yet anyways)

Both units can be utilized as a DAC only essentially bypassing the preamp / headamp features.  Drop the PC soundcard approach.

Keep us posted

If it has a burbrown DAC ? I have rxv477 and it has burbrown as well...I don't like it with th900, I do like it with z7

While you may be right Whitigir that the rxv477 is merely meh (havent heard it myself) keep in mind that the BB chip in its many forms is still a valid contender.

It all boils down to chip implementation.  How the chip is utilized and harnessed is what really matters.

Some will argue that the chip is the least important factor to building a stellar DAC.

Yea I think I am going for the v800/v850 +v200 Combo that many mentioned in this thread. It is warm sounding with the v200 no doubt, but its a very personal listening experience that way, you can't have it all at once.

Btw.. your favorite setup will really shine with this arranged guitar/banjo soundtrack - https://janetfeder.bandcamp.com/ Too good to not mention it. For usd $10 you get the ALAC/FLAC files.

MK2 will be available on 20th of January of Amazon.jp. Can't wait for European release! (or I could buy from Japan via ebay or something)

Absolutely ! But just as much as Z7, the cables that matters most would be the drivers inner cables

.. And extra solder joints ...not sure beside the detachable feature itself that if audio quality got affected.

If the audio is the same, I might as well buy the regular TH900 again considering the price difference. I wish someone compared them.

Until I find out first what enhancements are in driver development if any, then maybe impressions, would I consider further exploration of mk2. I'm not balanced so that is not a factor for me. IMO.

In all honesty obsidyen if I was in the market for a new 900 I wouldnt hesitate to shoot for the MK2.

Even if the sound is the same theres nothing wrong with a bit of a refresh IMO.

Besides its an easy way to try them out balanced.

Either way its a good problem to have.

I agree. I wonder when they'll be sold in Europe though. Soon, I hope.

Lol...I see what u did there ! Anyways, th900 is phenomenal in details and organic timbres. It is like hearing live music all over again in real live performance but with the soundstage mastered by the engineers in the studio :D. Another phenomenal thing about it is the sensitivity. My zx2 makes it sing so good

Has anyone tried the TH600/TH900's with Shure SRH1540 pads? I just threw a pair on my TH600's and I'm surprised. I usually have to EQ down the 600's by -3dB @ 8Khz but these are actually alot calmer in the upper mids and treble at least where my ears tend to be sensitive. Soundstage is a bit less more "cushioned" but then again the isolation improves by a few dB so idk if it's a tradeoff worth it or not.

EDIT: It seems to tame out the extremes over the stock pads. In other words stuff above 10k doesn't sparkle as high and stuff below 60hz doesn't hit as hard.

Nice looking cable mod.

I think it was Dubstep Girl who had a similiar setup a few moons ago.
