Can you post pic of your TH-900? This bloated bass is biggest upset for me in my TH-900.
You can solve that by using TH610 pads instead of the originals.
Here are my pad comparisons, using TH-610 pads as reference:
Dekoni hybrid - bass is not as perfect, doesn't hit as hard and as deep.
Dekoni Fenestrated - better than hybrid, but still not as good as 610
Dekoni TH900 Sheepskin - very similar to 610, better than 900 originals. Bass rumble is slightly worse than 610. Other than bass, possibly sounds better.
HD9999 thick pads - bass is as great as 610, sounds a bit darker and less clarity in the mids
TH900 original pads - bass rumble isn't good, doesn't sound as coherent as 610, slightly airier presentation with more recessed mids

Or you can try Takstar Pro 82 v2 / GM200, which were tuned after TH900 originally, but removed the treble peaks and fixed the crash in the mids at 1Khz.

I haven't touched my TH900MK2 in about a year now. In fact, until this morning I didn't even know where it was - found it accidentally looking for something else
They are the most beautiful headphones I own, but definitely not the best sounding ones.

Check the second post in the Pro 82 thread for comparisons: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/tak...iew-impressions-and-discussion-thread.849965/

I had the same doubt when purchasing the White Pearls, which I expect to audition by the end of the week.

@jmills8 is an expert with these cans and his recommendations took me to the silver dragon path because I'm looking a more linear sound, less v-shaped, less treble and more mids. Time will tell.

Did you end up getting your White Pearl mk2's yet? Curious to hear about your experience. I'm eyeing them myself

By the way, this might be a stupid question (I will admit, I'm no expert by any means nor do I have an engineering background):

Because you can do a lot with EQ, does it actually matter to swap out cables to change the sound signature of the TH900? Also, does it even matter if the White Pearl/Sapphires have a different tuning? Can't the reds simply be EQ'd to sound the same?

it matters to folks who believe that changing headphone cables changes the sound of a headphone. applying equalisation will definitely change the sound of a headphone.
