Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

the th900 mids are recessed and the fr measurements indicate that as well. it's known as having a u or v shaped sound signature, and there's nothing wrong with that.

the utopia has a more even fr and there's nothing wrong with that either. I like both.
Mod it and/or get a better amp/dac for the TH900.

@Allanmarcus

Is it true that the ESP950 is so fragile and have to be returned all the time?

All the time is way too strong. I have had to return mine twice, but there never have had to return theirs. Cost to turn is a $20 for shipping there and $9 back. I paid $450 for the headphones, case, and energizer (amp), which is an insane deal to get an entry level elecrostat. I then added the Vesper pads for $50 (I commissioned the first customer run, so I got a discount). Even at $600 for a new or used 950+vesper pads, they are totally worth it if you want to hear a truly transparent set of headphones.

I like my TH-900 MK2's a lot. I sold the HD-650's I had as they did absolutely nothing for me. I love the dynamics and liveliness of the TH-900's. I think because they do bass and treble so well that mids seem to take a back seat on most tracks. But I think the mid-range on these cans are just fine. I'm driving them with a Fostex balanced cable out of my Pro iCan and they sound absolutely fantastic!! I have a pair of the Dekoni fenestrated pads for them but I have yet to put them on.

I have heard some people say the TH-X00 are superior to the TH 900. What are your thoughts on this statement? I haven't heard the th-x00 but I do own the Denon AH-D5000 and while lovely headphones, do not hold a candle to the TH 900 in my opinion.

TH-X00's are in no way in the same league as the TH-900's. There's nothing the TH-X00's can do that the TH-900's doesn't do better and by a large margin. The TH-900's are the best dynamic headphone I have ever heard.

The only thing I preferred with TH-X00/EMU was the 2.5mm detachable cables (EMU only. No proprietary 2-pin connectors...) and the choice of Ebony wood cups. I should have kept the Ebony cups for TH-900s! Then again, it's a huge pain to change the wood cups...

The current connector on the MK2's is a little bulky. A 2.5mm connector would have made them a little more visually appealing for sure.

Thanks for the answers guys. I gotta ask again though - dekoni pads, elite sheepskin or elite fenstrated? is one objectively better than the other?

One will hear many many things. One can easily read what others think or wish. So the $400 TH-X00 are better than the Top Of The Line Fostex?

some folks hear the th900's mids as slightly recessed and others have described them in stronger terms. while the extent of this can vary subjectively for a variety of reasons, the objective measurements show that the th900's fr has a midrange dip between 500 and 600kHz of more than 10db, which is significant.

so the recessed midrange effect isn't just a result of its treble and bass presence. the th900 is regarded as a u/v shaped can for good reason.

I can definitely here it but it doesn't bother at all because they are such enjoyable headphones. I also don't mind a little EQing to tune headphones to my desired sound signature to make them even more enjoyable. I haven't done any EQuing with these headphones though. I just plug them into my Pro iCan with a balanced cable and enjoy what these headphones offer.
