Managed to make it back to my hotel room before 1AM. That's a win in my book. Currently doing a little unwinding with the DCA Expanse running off my SMSL VMV P2 and Gustard R26. It's awesome how often I pick some gear like this and after a few minutes of listening I still get that feeling of being a bit shocked that a lostening experience this good is available on demand at my fingertips.

First up tonight are Hadal Sherpa with their 2017 self-titled release. These guys are a Finnish instrumental prog band whose music incorporates significant psychedelic elements. They include non-standard instruments like the flute to great effect as well as dipping into Middle Eastern and other regional genres and styles. Hell, they even throw some surf rock riffage in their on one track The songwriting, execution, and musicianship are top notch and the production is nicely done, as well. This will be my second time through this album sonce discovering it a couple days ago and I can gurantee that it won't be my last. This is another instance where I'm hoping that there's more to come from these guys in the future. Standout tracks are Nautilus Pt. 2 and Ikaros though there's not a bad song in the bunch. If you're into prog forged from an eclectic mix of styles and genres, this album ought to be your jam. 🔥🤘😎

I'll give this a whirl tonight as it seems something I'd enjoy.
I'm currently listening to the new Pink Floyd @ Pompeii remix/remaster by Steven Wilson, which sounds amazing considering it's over 50 years old - Steven Wilson has worked miracles yet again.

Qobuz (Android / LDAC) > Muse Hifi M5 Ultra > Pula Anvil 114
Sitting on here on holidays with a nice view of the pool and the sea and enjoying music in a quality that isn't too far off from my desktop stack. Not bad at all.

As always, let me know what you think. I'm gonna take some time today and see if I can find out if the band members have done any other projects that might be worth checking out.

Ooh, I don't think I've ever heard of this album/artist before. It's definitely going into the queue for later. Thanks for the rec! 👍

Topical Shenanigans:

I couldn't sleep much last night so I guess getting back to my hotel room earlier than usual didn't make much of a difference, after all. I ended up taking a bit of time this morning to try a couple of basic mods out on my HE6se V2s which I acquired with the intent of using them to experiment with mods. I already had a pair of hex grilles ready and waiting for them so I threw them on and I spent some time doing a sorbothane mod that I've found to be effective on some other Hifiman round cup models. Now it's time to hear what they've accomplished. I'll be running them off the SMSL VMV P2 and Gustard R26, at least initially.

Leading off my queue are Decimals with their 2021 album, Symmetry. Decimals are a Barcelona-based prog-metal band that my bassist turned me on to a couple years ago. Symmetry is their debut album and was their only LP at the time I first checked them out. For a debut, this album is a pretty polished product and whoever did their production, while a little compression happy (it's hard to find a producer in the harder rock genres who isn't), did a solid job putting the band's best foot forward. They released a follow-up album late-ish last year, but this one remains my favorite. It's mostly just straightforward prog-metal, but you can definitely pick up on the occasional guitar riff inspired by the classical guitar playing Spain is famous for. The drummer/percussionist is the real unsung hero of this album as it's clearly written and arranged to be guitar focused, but his playing and the way it manages to drive the pocket while accenting and elevating what the guitarist is doing with the melody really ought to be commended. If you're a prog and/or prog-metal fan, gice this one a spin. 🤘😎

Edited to add that Signals and Beyond the Gate are sick tracks and eould be my picks for the standouts from this set.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Hope they create more music. As you note prog rock forged from an heady eclectic musical mix that hangs together fab-ly.

Now playing, on Miroak II

Kiwi Ears Punch < Hiby R4

Kush + Orange Juice 2 (2025), Wiz Khalifa

600x600bf-60.jpg

I've never been hooked by a Wiz Khalifa release until now. Some genuine surprises here (including a collab with Terrace Martin). Even more, the Kiwi Ears Punch get pushed to their low-end limit with these wildly bassy tracks and come out beautifully for the effort. The Punch are impressive for just how versatile they are. Cool and collected for most mixes, but they bring the party when asked.
