GAPVIS (2025) by Roland Bühlmann - Friday saw a new release from Swiss musician and composer Roland Buhlmann and it was a welcome addition to my ROON library as I already have his previous albums. His music is a blend of instrumental prog and fusion, he plays all of the instruments too and does a great job of it. This is only my second listen so I haven't formed any favourites yet but so far it all sounds rather good. It's guitar centric, both electric and classical and he makes good use of an Aeon sustainer for some nice bowed and swell effects. He also makes a lot of use of synthesizers, both hardware and software and to round it out, and I like this, "various objects as percussion".
The album sounds sublime through the HD800S, it's the kind of music these were made for, myriad different sounds and every one of them has it's own place in the stage.

I haven't listened to this in ages. Looking back, this album and its (incredible) predecessor, Rage for Order, were more unusual than I knew they were at the time. More "story albums" than "concept albums." Together, those two albums constitute what amounts to a two-part movie musical about spies, global conspiracies, surveillance technology, revolutionary movements, and romance. I also distinctly remember listening to Rage for Order on my dad's nice pair of headphones. One of those formative audio experiences for me.

Ah yes! I have similar memories for rage for order. A friend's father had this hi-fi speaker equipment that he had got down from Singapore. Occasionally we would listen on em in full blast when the folks weren't there. It was a lovely communal experience for us teenagers that has stayed in minds.

The whole music scene was quite something looking back. First, lists for songs or albums would be drawn individually..then cross checked to eliminate duplication. Shared bike rides late evening to a house of an adult guy who had the equipment to record on tape cassette..lists given excitedly and a return visit later on to collect it feverishly. And the rush back homes, parting ways with different cassettes and heading to our homes.

But yeah the music listened together on that particular friend's house still lingers in memory.

Porn vhs tapes and music at his home (when folks were absent) are the great memories. Haha...

What is this?!?! I follow dude on Bandcamp and I didn't even get an email update about a new LP? At least I've got good ol' rids to keep me up to date. Thanks for the heads-up, bro. I love how RB uses a different theme and voice for each album and I'm really looking forward to hearing what direction he has taken this one. I hope it meets his usual standards. 🤞

I enjoy the ability we have these days to listen to music personally and in so many different situations that we weren't able to not all that long ago. I really do. That said, I also miss the days when physical media and stereo setups made listening sessions and especially new album drops a communal event that brought so many people together whether it was friends, families, neighbors, etc. I've been trying to create that kind of experience at my house by inviting people over for listening parties and encouraging my nieces, nephews, and even some of the neighborhood kids to come by and use my main system whenever they've got some new album they're particularly hyped about or just want to have a fun sesh with friends.

I know how much I enjoyed those experiences and still cherish the memories of them and I can't imagine growing up with music being this mostly solitary experience that doesn't have memories of shared enjoyment and experiences attached to it. The only downside to opening up my house and my listening room to the younger generation is that I've ended up listening to some truly terrible "music" in stunning detail. 😭😂

Anyways, that was a cool story and the end definitely made me laugh. I mean, what's not funny about porn as a physical media shared experience? 😂 Somehow the VHS part makes it even more hilarious. Thanks for sharing, bro! 😎

Topical Nonsense:

I'm on the DCA Expanse this fine sunday morning and they're being driven by the SMSL VMV P2 and Gustard R26 signal chain. Do you guys ever have one of those sessions where you start off with one pair of headphones and they don't quite hit the spot so you move on down the line until you put on a pair that just sounds perfect from the jump and you wonder if this is what King Arthur felt like when he pulled Excalibur from the stone? That's how this morning went down. The Expanse are my Excalibur and they sound freakin' wonderful right now.

Kickin' off my sesh this morning are Socks and Ballerinas with their 2024 release, A Bit Jumpy. I was looking for something different to listen to this morning and then I remember that I've been meaning to revisit this release from this Bristol-based experimental duo for a while now. Shortly after it's September release, this album came up as an album of the week rec on my Bandcamp page so I checked it out. The music is an inventive mashup of so many different genres, stylistic influences, and sounds that you can't possibly catch it all on the first listen and the descriptor "experimental" truly does fit it well. Making one's way through the album, a listener will hear prog elements, garage rock, post-rock, indie, blues rock, electronic genres, chip tunes, jazzy passages, strings in the background, and much, much more. On paper it sounds like you couldn't possibly combine all those disparate elements and produce anything that could reasonably be called music, but I assure you they managed it. After my first listen I was left feeling like there so much to hear that I had surely missed a lot and needed to make time to go back for more. I'm looking forward to seeing what I pick up on this time around. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you want something totally different from your current listening choices, this album will fit the bill. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from yours truly. 👍👍😎

:-) truly! And I rofled at the terrible music in stunning detail!

As for VHS, here is a lovely recount of VHS history..

R.I.P VHS https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/46497/r.i.p.-vhs

For now, there was the trudge home—swinging a plastic bag which contained the rented cassette and a packet of soon-to be incinerated microwave popcorn—buoyed along by that feeling that comes in between getting a thing you want and consuming it.

Now playing: have heard it once before, Glass's symphony 11 is done rather grandly here..

Really lovely pop album with lots of jazz/classical/folk/bossa nova elements.
