I'm really liking the Mullard 6080, getting some nice soundstage and some decent amount of details. What would be the next step up if I'm looking purely for bass punch/ slam? Tung-sol 5998 or maybe Chatham 6as7g?

As for bass slam definitely TS 5998. Chatham 6as7 is more delicate with more midrange focus.

Don't overlook the GE 6as7GA it has been the bass king in all the compatible amps I have owned

For reasons we do not understand, it appears that on occasion Tung-Sol deliberately mislabeled 5598 as 6520. Perhaps a customer ordered 6520 and Tung-Sol didn't have any in stock? So a 5998, which is after all a premium tube, was mislabeled and shipped out.

But again, this is just a guess. :)
Use the search. This has been covered earlier in this thread. The 6520 is a different tube than the 5998, with slightly different characteristics. Short story long people tend to prefer the 5998, but if you find a 6520 for a good deal snag it.

The reason I have heard is lower noise floor.

Unfortunately that is not the case with Elise and Euforia. They do not have lower noise floor than other tube amps I have that use a single dual triode.... and I had Elise and Euforia for quite a while.

I will name you 3 amps with single dual triodes that have lower noise floor than Elise and Euforia - Ultimate, Odyssey and Studio Six.

If you use the search, you will find that gibosi is a source of info here. 6520 without the dimples on the plate is a different tube than the 5998. 6520 with dimples is the same tube as 5998. Some of us do have both versions of 6520.

I’ve read this entire thread. And the 421a/5998 comparison thread. And multiple other sources including tube specification sheets. I qualified my answer with “short story long” because there isn’t a short answer. There is conflicting information, various opinions, a multitude of pictures and no one has a universal understanding or answer to the history of these tubes. That being said, a search is a step toward forming a better understanding. Yes, there are dimpled/domino versions of the 6520 that many say are a 5998. That doesn’t mean they are a 5998. That doesn’t mean they’re not. Spec sheets would argue they are not but humans made these things and things can be mislabeled. This thread is miles long. I don’t expect everyone to read it. But it has a LOT of useful information.
