I just had my right driver spontaneously fail, less than half a year after purchase.

If the known issues with early production batches were identified and resolved, why is this still happening?
I have seen photos showing the wiring connecting the cable to the driver. And it has been explained to me that that is relatively fragile with not as much protection as other headphones can offer, say, compared to the old trusty sennheiser range

That’s how it’s been explained to me.

Perhaps that is what it is.

I have had the elears and they are going great.

Another question, s'il vous plait. Having the pair Chord Blue / Dave, I am inclined to add Utopia to my headphones, considering the proven synergy. However I wonder if it is the best choice to listen mainly to operas. Each headset has its favorite terrain, my HD800 is very good for the classic, where the LCD3 is basically useless there, while it is good with rock. So, for those of you who know them well, better Utopia for classical music or Abyss? Many thanks in advance!

After buying the Utopias, I sold my HD800 and LCD3. I never preferred either to the Utopias, for any genre. Certainly that includes classical. I demo'ed the Abyss three years ago. I found them inferior at the time to my HD800 and LCD3. Too distant, too much "like speakers" than headphones should ever be. Misses the point. So, I'd pick Utopia over all three of those, sans regrets.

My left driver failed last week. Today I returned them to my dealer for a warranty repair. Can somebody tell me - what is this process like? How long until they come back? Do they repair or replace? Mine were made Oct 2016 and purchased Dec 2016. Has quality control improved (or declined)? Has the sound signature changed at all? (Sorry - I suspect this is all addressed elsewhere in this thread.)

Last night I received a replacement pair of Utopias under the warranty. I was very impressed with Focal's responsibility in this. The new pair sounds fantastic - off the bat I'd say at least as good as my original pair. I am experiencing a slight difference in the sound, but I can’t name it. The grunt, the air, and the immediacy that I love are all there. Granted, I’m comparing to a pair I last heard three weeks ago, that had been broken-in through two years of use.

Some elements of the build are clearly different. The old pair creaked when I lifted them and placed them on my noggin. No creaking was audible once they were on my head. These don’t creak at all. Also, my old pair felt heavier in the headband than these do. So, I’d say Focal has surely made some manufacturing adjustments over the past two years. All companies do, of course, as they should.

These are still a strong “buy” recommendation from me, even at $4K. At these new prices, hell yeah. It makes sense to me that your headphones should be the most-expensive component in your system.

I don't think this is about the new models. They did this same promotion a year ago.

Almost the same but very close. There is always something new on the horizon but for certain the Utopia is not being replaced very soon
