ELEGIA TO GRADO HEADBAND REPLACEMENT

After five years of normal usage my headband finally broke. I have a big head so they were stretched a bit each time I put them on/off.

Here is my mod to substitute a Chinese "Grado like" headband
This kit came with a good assortment of screws, nuts, and washers.

In the first image you see where the plastic bit is broken.
You need a T6 Torx screwdriver. The screws are very tight, so I had to sharpen my Torx bit a little to get a good grip.
Make note of the left & right parts.
The driver is loose in the cup... don't drop it
Use a needle-nose pliers to pull the little pins out of the Focal hinge
Discard the springs... they are not essential to the fit.
Use a Dremel to grind a flat spot on the inside of the hinge holes to accommodate the self locking nuts.
Note the Left & Right yokes on the new headband. I got it wrong on the first attempt.

Use tape to hold the yokes in place when inserting the screws. I used a flat washer against the yoke and a rubber grommet next to the cup.

Give the cups a good cleaning out with a blower or canned air before final assembly.

The end result reminds me of my old Grados. The cups swivel freely. I have a large head and use the lowest setting on the yoke pins. Smaller heads may need "nuggets" on the headband. The fit is comfortable and the improvement in clamp force has brought out the bass that was lost when the Focal headband broke.

ELEGIA TO GRADO HEADBAND REPLACEMENT

Just a follow up note... the Elegias no longer fit in the hard case.

ELEGIA TO GRADO HEADBAND REPLACEMENT

"Grado" Mod = 413gm. Stock weight is 430gm.

I am feeling that the better fit has improved the overall tone. I have switched back to the stock pads (from the Dekoni Custom pads).

ELEGIA TO GRADO/AUDEZE TYPE HEADBAND REPLACEMENT

I have a large head, but the smallest setting on the rods still left a gap. I added a cushion made from an old mouse pad (using double sided tape).

This improves both the fit and the comfort.

This was a fun project.

How much difference in sound quality beetween these two 59$ vs 129$ Meze cables? 🤔 I'm also considering to purchase Meze 4.4 cable for my Elegia...
Test track: Easy Money, Ricky Lee Jones.

My old ears cannot detect any difference. The "silver" cable is much better looking

ELEGIA "OPEN" MODS?

My Elegias have become a project after I installed the Audeze type headband from China.

I find with the tighter seal and the Dekoni Custom Stellia pads the bass is "muffled". I am considering opening the cups by adding more vents (drilling holes in the cup).

Has anyone tried this mod? Any suggestions?

I considered doing this with an Elegia for fun and then using EQ as far as possible to correct for the change. It won't be perfect but could be fun!

If you're going to open it, fully open it, so lots of holes, similar to a clear MG. And you will absolute have to EQ it. It's the same dome as the Focal Clear OG so could be interesting.

I have the Meze 4.4mm balanced cables for my Elegia. Great sound and build quality, would recommend.

I use a $300 cable with a mix of copper and silver. No sound difference whatsoever compared to the stock cable (other than microphonics). But a world of difference in ergonomics and appearance. It's gorgeous, and I love using it every day. Worth every penny.

OPEN MODS?

Thanks for your notes. I am trying to avoid EQ fixes as Tidal on my DAP does not have EQ functions.

Hopeful we will hear from others before I perform this mod as it would be hard to close the cups if I change my mind.

You'll want some way to re-tune them if you "open" them. EQ is easiest obviously. You'll probably want a way to measure them through the process too.
