flinkenick's 17 Flagship IEM Shootout Thread (and general high-end portable audio discussion)

Thanks. What's the main differences between the 1950s and 1960s? I believe the 1950s is better paired with bassier/warmer IEMs like LX, and 1960s with airier/brighter IEMs like Fourte. Not sure why or how, just what I've read. If that's true, I have a use case for both.
Also interested in this - having the bird with the 1960, I’m keen on a pair for my other IEMs.

These PWs seem like a bit of an enigma - think it all comes down to synergy. I know the 1950 is often paired with bassier IEMs but the 1960 can work great too....if I recall correctly, @twister6 really enjoyed the pairing of 1960 4W with the Noir.

I wrote all of the Jolene comparisons (including against the Noir and A18s) with the bass dials at near-max; probably about 85-90% of the way there. Turning it up from there to 100% doesn't make too big a difference, so my comparisons would still apply.

It doesn't look like it. I only had My IEM Store's translated FB post to go off of, and I don't think it mentioned a DD. The Anole VX didn't have a DD either.

Oh mine so Joelene was in beast mode ! 😎
I thought it was dialed in 2 am o'clock near 0. Thanks to clarify then that means Jolene at its max is pretty balanced and not as bassy? Or dynamically aggressive like noirs?

You replaced the stock cable that came with Traillii with 1960? I assume this is your favorite pairing?

I was looking at Eletech Iliad for the bird.

No....sorry, I meant having heard the Traillii with its stock cable which I believe is the 4-wire 1960 (or slightly tuned version of it).

Speaking of swappable faceplates, I think a brand that's gone completely under the radar for their moves there is Ultimate Ears. They first announced it in November 2020, and it's called the UE SWITCH faceplates: https://custom.ultimateears.com/blogs/custom-made/introducing-ue-switch-interchangeable-faceplates

They're essentially swappable faceplates that lock onto the shell with a twist-lock mechanism, so you're able to change them on the fly. And, what's unique is that they're made for custom IEMs, which means a lot more work goes into it. It's a shame that their latest models weren't received all too well, but I'm confident we'll see them again at some point in the future.
This reminds me of Erlky faceplates. Now that I have 6 pairs, I swap them less and less frequently 🙃

qdc just announced a new flagship V14, which incorporates e-stats as well as balanced-armatures. My IEM Store's Facebook page lists its price at US$3000 for the universal and US$3400 for the custom. It also features swappable faceplates, but I don't know if it's only on the universal or the custom as well. It's hard for me to get excited about a $3000 flagship after what I heard out of the Jolene's yesterday. But, still, I look forward to trying it in 2022, I guess. :D

I don’t think the faceplate is swappable. Just saw a video of the V14 faceplates changing color after absorbing UV light. There are now 4 switches which equals 16 different sound profile/tweaks, damn getting even closer to that Anole name!

The listed price in China is 17800 RMB / 19800 RMB for these but as you can see, the price sold abroad will vary.

Oh, I can see where the confusion is now. JH’s bass pod doesn’t work like a clock. It’s more like a speedometer. So, 0% is actually at about 8 o’ clock and 100% is at about 4 o’clock. Just like, on a speedometer, 0 MPH is at 8 o’clock and 200 or 220 MPH is at 4 o’clock.

The Jolene is about as bassy as the Noir at around 2 o’clock. It’s more sub-bass-y than it past that. Dynamically, they’re about the same. They just punch in different areas; the sub-bass, centre-mids and upper-treble for the Jolene, and the mid-bass, upper-mids and lower-treble for the Noir.

For someone who generally gets annoyed by the upper mids in half the IEMs, I didn’t find the noir too bad honestly - if the Jolene tones them down a little further and emphasizes the lower mids + upper treble I think I’ve found my new daily
