Looking for my first real set of headphones. I can't decide which one to get. How would you compare these sound wise?

595=70000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times the headphone the TMA-1 will ever be, I'm sure head-fi is going to crucify me for saying that, I used them properly amped they sounded like skull candy low riders....with slightly more mids.

What are you looking for in a headphone? Are you gonna use them at home, or on the go? Where will you be plugging these headphones into? What are your music preferences?
The HD595 and TMA-1 are entirely different headphones for different purposes. Is your choice limited to these two, or are you also open to other headphones?

Just looking for a pair to have around the house for my laptop and occassionally to plug into a synth keyboard.

FWIR, I second the 595. It was my second choice to my SRH840.

[size=x-small]595 have a nice smooth and open sound, for me they kind of do everything the HD650 do but not quite as well (I've heard similar comments from others, including the person I sold my HD650s to who used to own the 595). Do they have enough bass? Depends entirely on the person's listenings preference, but they certainly don't have a huge amount of it. They are open so not good for situations where there will be sound leakage in, or your sound leakage out might irritate others. 595 are also phones which do call for a bit of amplification.[/size]
 
[size=x-small]TMA-1, with stock pleather pads are very bassy and have attenuated treble. They seem to work very well with electronic and club music but with can be a bit muffled for vocal performances. They are much more portable than the 595 both in size, their extreme efficiency (no amp required) and that they are closed with good isolation. They come with a second pair of pads, foam ones, which are absurdly open and result in an all-treble sound which is frankly terrible. [/size][size=x-small]You can easily tear these foams off the base without ripping them (so they can be glued back on if for some unknown reason you would want to) and apply any other pads that fit to the base. I have found you can get a much more balanced sound signature with extreme clarity with Stax SR-X pads.[/size]
 
[size=x-small]That said if these are your first set of headphones, you are unlikely to have a shoebox of headphone parts like I have.

[size=x-small]So I'd say if you like a bassy fun sound then the TMA-1 will suit you well, alternately, if you want a less bassy but clearer sound with an overall smooth and relaxing presentation and the open backed deisgn is not a problem for your needs (and you have a headphone amp_ go with the 595. [size=x-small]There are other options though. Perhaps you could give a detailed run down of your listening habbits, what you'll be pluigging them into and how you'll be using them (portable, home use, both etc) and you'll get suggestsions aimed much more at your actual circumstances?[/size]
