Fiio X5 - Custom/Modded firmwares

Heads up modders, if you want to know what the themes are like on the X5 II I've done some conversions and have some info.

- First of all the screen is gorgeous. I thought the X5 screen was great but man alive the new model is simply stunning.

Transfering themes is relatively easy. The biggest thing is for the full screen size images you need to make them 400x360, not 400x328. They did this because you can now have a transparent topbar and the full screen bg image can show through. If you can't paste your original image over a blank larger background this will distort your image if you just do a resize.

There is no bg for play settings and system settings. I'm quite disappointed by this as I have some backgrounds that work specifically for these two menus, and I really like them. I'll take a look to see if I can work around this (substitute something) but it doesn't look promising so far.

The coordinates and fonts are shared so be aware if you want to combine multiple themes in one FW. I've done two separate themes in the same FW so far (Analogue and Star Trek) and it works without issues.

The battery still only uses 5 images for the level indicator. Again, disappointed by this.

On the X5 II when you use the buttons to navigate the main menu it defaults to a straight menu. Kind of cool and I'm able to have both the custom menu and the straight menu working on the same FW.

Overall though, besides the gorgeous screen, I prefer the X5 over the X5 II for custom themes.

simply put, if I add the PNG from X5II, the entire UI seems slower, sometimes it seems to struggle to draw the graphics, like the CPU does not have enough power. But as I understand X5II uses the same cpu.

I needed to reset at least once, so I am still trying to figure out why.

George, I had a look at the images from the X5 II and there are A LOT of empty files in the new X5 II themes. Also some of the highlight bars are using much more compression so it's what I guessed at earlier. Many image resolutions are the same but a few of them are different so if trying to use the icons from the X5 II be aware of what the icon resolution is.

You could try to replace one of the icons that is in un-selected mode, or that never changes it's image, but the UI will try to draw that icon in the place it was, so I guess that there are not great workarounds for this thing.

I had not messed up the resolution, but I messed up with the compression algorithms.

Even at the same resolution, if you simply copy paste some of the icons, the compression is too much for x5 to handle.

OT:

Though after looking for a longer time into x5II, I think that I might want to stick with my x5. I like the design of the DAP more,  though the mentioned differences in SQ might interest me. I still wonder if the differences people mention still are there with the line out, or just with the HO. Because I am using my X5 almost exclusively line out to E12a.

OT: I can't hear any difference through line out so far.

Then, I guess that what James said to me in X5II thread was correct. There is little reason to upgrade to X5II if I use only the line out. Thanks for confirming this to me.

I guess that we will must make packs of themes that can take advantage of the using the same font colours,  for x5II, right?

I mean, my themes use only gray fonts, and therefore will not be compatible with all the other themes

Are you going to also try to mod the UI?

It is so much fun if you invest enough time in doing so.

Might any of you know if @Hawaiibadboy's theme High-Fi is firmware v2.5? That one is a real pleasure to look at.

I thought as much. The post linked within the table on the first page spoke only of v2.4, but I figured you would have kept current.

Between Your Hi-fi and Relic's Analogue, I don't know which I'll load when my X5 gets here. :)

Try em both. Most folks cycle through multiple themes just to keep it refreshing. Enjoy whatever you choose

Would have been nice to have a theme chooser

Yes and no. I'm transferring some of my themes to the X5 II and there are limits simply because elements of the themes are shared, therefore they aren't as customized. You can basically do more with the X5 custom themes. At the same time it's very nice to switch to a different theme at will.

You can choose different colors on themes on the x1 in the system menu settings . Would that be possible on the x5?

Yup. Well, in the config.ini file when you make a custom theme.
