Is it my imagination (or my memory really that bad, a distinct possibility), or did the GUI for the native player change with the last firmware upgrade?

My device no longer displays the VU meter.

Actually, that's really a question for @jkbuha ... in your travels through the x5iii's inner workings, have you come across any code that would confirm that "In Vehicle" mode bypasses battery charging? Perhaps that's a quick option for those of us with K5 docks to keep our batteries safer?

Not that I've seen. But in-vehicle mode is a ROM feature, and that part of the code is not accessible, because (i) it's in the ROM not in the kernel, and more importantly, (ii) that part is closed source

That's been the case since we left 1.2.1 & the 3.4.3 FiiO Music App. Firmware 1.2.2, 1.2.3 & FiiO Music App 1.0.8 & 1.0.9, respectively, have changed the interface. You'll now find replaygain, more customizable themes, better alphabetical sorting, and a distinct lack of vipereffects and a VU meter.

Hmmm. Well, sir, anything you can do to bring us common plebians adaptive charging via the kernel would certainly be appreciated. Will post any and all info on the battery once the new one arrives. While I have the unit open, is there any other information I can provide?

Adaptive kernel charging is what I'm working on next, once I've updated a significant chunk of the kernel code (suffice to say most of it hasn't been touched since 2011, hence you can imagine which particular circle in Dante's hell I find myself in at the moment...)

If you could upload some clear photos of the innards of the FiiO, eg: PCB, components etc, I'll be able to source the updated drivers for the chips in question. Next on the list would be updated drivers for the AK4490 for example...

Thanks for clarifying! So the $$$ (not a lot, grant you) I paid for the select Viper Effects are bye-bye then?

You have to fully delete the new FiiO Music app and replace it with this Click here you'll get the old application back.
I, too, purchased some effects, I totally forget how, though. So I don't know how to get it to reengage them or check for the purchases, so I stuck with the newer interface.

Cool, thanks again. I'm not sure I care about the fx, as I really didn't use them all that much. I was using Hiby more often than not, until about 2 months ago when all of a sudden, gapless play stopped working properly (short gap between tracks).

with the .apk, is as simple as dragging and dropping it on the root directly of the device (internal)?

Well, let's start with this (do take note of the embedded fingerprints I noted when I first got it open!):

Also disappeared from app is the not very efficient lyrics service. :boy: not sure how to feel of a company providing things to sell you on the product and then taking them back. It would be like taking my car in to the dealership for service and they pulled out some parts without replacement.

Exactly, i was a user of viper, and very disappointed it was no longer part of the fiio music app, as their partnership with viper ran out. Still, the pure music mode sounds pretty darn good to me.

To anyone else using a 400 GB memory card, and has it "full" can you tell me how much data you are able to fill on it?
I'm aware that 366-367 GB should be the amount usable (once formatted for use in the X5III).
This is more or less confirmed when I use File Manager+, it shows I have 331GB/367GB in use, and 35.22GB of free space.
However when I mount this to my computer (a Mac) in finder it shows a capacity of 393.74GB, with 355.92GB in use, and 37.82GB of free space.
How much more free space can I use before running into problems? I don't know enough to understand the discrepancy between these numbers.

I think I will be the odd man out here, but I really do not prefer to have so much storage space. This is quite possibly only me, but I find when I have so much choice I either can not seem to find anything or else I can rarely just settle down and listen to something as I very often get this intrusive desire to find something else to play often before what I am playing is even through. Back in the day when you had to make mixed tapes or CDs, or play an album on vinyl or compact disk I was so much more inclined to let things play. For me anyway too much choice can be too much of a good thing. With my portables for sure I limit how much stuff I put on them down to what I realistically will listen to. I have a few hundred CDs ripped and archived that I know I will never listen to again so I do not bother dumping them to cart around with me. Again, that is simply me and these thoughts are rather undirected, but they were triggered by wondering just how much music it takes to fill almost 400GB!!

I definitely agree about the 'analysis paralysis' phenomenon.

Before I had my FiiO X5III, though, I was stuck with a 16gb iPod nano...
So I'm using the :heavy_dollar_sign::hash::grey_exclamation::heavy_plus_sign: out of the space available to me.
Different strokes for different, folks, I guess.
