FiiO X5 2nd gen Impressions and Discussion thread

It's been able to read all contents of my 200gb card, but when updating the media library using this higher capacity card... the unit hangs and needs to be rebooted.

And after that the media library is incomplete?

I guess whatever the problem is, it will be fixed with a firmware update.

It was hard to discern whether the library was complete because it would respond so slowly, freezing and hanging for inordinate periods.  I’d use the return button to get out of that subheading.  Folder mode and all the other functions work perfectly with this card.  When I did manage to scroll down within the library, it did look like every song and artist were properly categorized, but since the unit was lagging I’ve stayed away from launching via genre or artist.  I’m assuming this 200gb will engender many firmware updates from manufacturers.

Is it a general problem acknowleged by Fiio? Probably it should be cured with a future FW.

The X5 II is new and the 200gb cards are new, so it's a new malady that will begin to be reported and assuredly solved.  FWIW, my X3 II perfectly updates my media library with a 128gb card, but if I create alphabetized subfolders on the card to categorize the titles the screen goes white and hangs.  Others have reported this trouble as well.  My Hidizs AP100 doesn't do this and is remarkably resilient with every configuration thrown in its direction.  To be continued...

Does the X5 II have this issue too? Or is this only with the X3 II?

It only occurred on the X3 II when, underscore when, I created a card with alphabetized folders containing the files and then tried the media update.  Without the alphabetized folders the update performed flawlessly.  I’d seen messages from other users on FiiO’s website citing the frozen white screen when updating the media library within the X3, but no mention whether the cards had the A-C style folders I’d created on the card itself before updating.

Im glad I saw this I had a bit of trouble when I found out my 128gb "micro" sd card was fake so I took the legit one from my dx90 and formatted it to fat32, and then updating my library made my x5 run super slow. Now I know that fiio recommends fat32 but can we use other formats because the speed of browsing files, folders, albums is much slower than the dx90 after a media scan.

After minor incompatibilities using external formatting devices, I've exclusively formatted micro sd cards within all FiiO units for use with their own products.

I had to epoxy those feet to hold them in place, so the silicone card seems a shrewd solution.

As far as the silicone cases we received with our X5 II, FiiO says they're discontinuing including those due to complaints about them acting as dust magnets as well as emitting an odor.  I've always liked those cases myself.  FiiO claimed some were scented with jasmine.  I never noticed any aroma from them, but I also don't spend an inordinate amount of time smelling my audio equipment.

@ A Spencer;

Too funny and the reason to stop by this thread daily! I like the silicon case and DID smell it - nothing negative to report. Now that I've heard some cases were jasmine scented I'm a bit jealous. If the future is good to us, maybe FiiO will give us color choices and scent options at the time of purchase. Hoping for Brown/Chocolate personally.

This is very sound advice.

Speed of browsing should be instant. If you're running in to troubles there is something wrong.

Did you format with the X5ii?

Do you have extra files that don't belong (only music and cover art and lyrics should be there) in the folders?

Is your album art above 1024x1024? The smaller the better. 500x500 is recommended.

Do you have your id3 tags in order?

If not using FAT32 you won't be able to update the firmware.

Apologies if this has previously been answered.

When the X5 2nd gen is connected to the pc does it appear in Computer as separate drives for each SD card?

I would suggest updating the SD Card(s) by plugging them into your computer directly even though the X5ii unit is recognized as it's own drive (SD cards will read: "X5 TF1 (drive letter)" + "X5 TF2 (drive letter)". The process of transferring files with the X5ii's USB cable is truly an exercise in patience and about as fun as watching paint dry.

Got a Meenova Dash Micro SD Reader today. This is an OTG card reader that holds a mirco SD card. Does not work in the X5-2 but a OTG cable with a Corsair 128GB slider flash drive works great. The Meenova
works in my Moto G and Samsung Tab just fine. Sure hope an X5 update in the future will fix this setup. If they can fix this I can hook up a SSD Hard Drive that also work in both Android products.
