That’s not the case, I downgraded all the way down to 1.02, and tried it, I then upgraded incrementally to 1.06. Every reboot after upgrade/downgrade took several tries for the M17 to boot up. So, it can’t be firmware related.
There could be a loose connection or a failing chip, I don’t know. All I know is that it’s getting worse.
So as to avoid import charges, I gave my M17 to a friend who is travelling to HK. She will cross the border and post it to FiiO as soon as she can.
I shall keep you all posted.
**Update**
My M17 is at FiiO.
They have a 10 working days turn around for repairs and then, however long it takes to post it back to me or if the deadline is met, back to HK to my friend (which maybe quicker).
I shall updated again when things advance.

Got any hint about that? I noticed western Digital has a paper saying you are sending something for repairs with the declared value being 1$. Is that what you're referring to?

Service provider issues you a numbered RMA (return merchandise authorization) and you use it as a reference in customs outward processing procedure.
Next time I’d recommend reaching out to FiiO for RMA and doing a bit of research with your home country customs office on how the formalities go in your case.

In my case they were ligthning fast in saying they had no spare parts at all!
Amazing fast service didn't even have the item out of my hands for a single second!

I am not sure about that. They told me to post it with a declared value of 20$, to which I said no effing way!. Luckily, my friend was travelling to her house in HK, and she offered taking it and, if fixed before her return to London, I told FiiO to post it back to HK so that she can bringing it back with her.
Slightly off-topic, but I’ve just bought a FiiO R7. What a beast! I use it exclusively with Roon. Here are my comparisons with the M17 on the Roon forum:
looks I have had similar times such a problem like you posted
But the latest issue happened more than month ago.
And I still didn't face the issue with the latest software version.
Also I grabbed some boot logs:
