Fiio FT5

Running my FT5's this week and the joy has been up and down, depending on the music. Changed it up a bit going from the iFi to a Violectric. Different sound and a little more fun.

Then I switched over to the Valhalla 2 and put on my test list today. SO much happiness! :L3000:

My week with the FT5's is winding down. Today I put the suede pads on. Definitely a different sound. To me, they do lack some sharpness. I have to try them with all my genre's though as so far it has just been 1990's/2000's rock and pop-rock.
if you want earpiercing sharpness just get any hifiman and you are done

nice review, thank you. only thing i am missing is a word about soundstage depth.

I did briefly mention that the sound staging isn't huge but, the good separation and layering makes up for this a bit. They're not a big and airy headphone, they do have a slightly more intimate presentation.

I don't find that at all. I have enjoyed my HE6se V2's for a few years. Two weeks ago I picked up some used Arya's and I am loving them.

Susvara is also anything but sharp, but that's getting off topic

do you eq, use an r2r dac or tubes?
Schiit BF2 to iFi Pro iCAN using bass boost and 3D sound effects. As I said, I have really enjoyed HE6se V2's, but the Arya's are a joy to listen to with almost everything.
The only thing they don't do great is lo-fi/noisy stuff, but that's fine. The better the music, the better they are. Superb on clean rock and jazz.

ok, bass boost and 3d effects and one of the warmest dacs on the market plus tube amp explains everything, you can bend any headphone frequency response to your liking this way.. nuff said

Please allow me to ask for two recommendations (and I hope this is ok here in this thread):
1) what portable DAP could drive the FT5 in a good way, so that its strength can also shine? Heard quite many reviewers so far which state that most portable DAPs won't have enough power to let the FT5 shine in a full portable setup... Yes, some more powerful seem to give enough volume, but at the cost of sound clarity and sound stage, as well as they said that the FT5 can still sound rather "flimsy" and underwhelming with portable DAPs. What are your thoughts? Are there any portables which are good enough for the FT5 (and if so, not too expensive >> 500-1000$ range)??

2) ...and same goes for desktop AMP/DACs, are there any you could recommend in again, the 500-1000$ class?
EDIT: To answer 2) I think I might go with the Aune S9C Pro which seems great and is exactly within budget.

Just saw the very long "The Headphone Show" live wrap-up also featuring the FT5 with the typical measurements they feature on this YT channel and they were dissecting the sound signature. He is nearly the only reviewer that found the FT5 to be absolutely "weird". At quite some points he was even laughing (not in a good way though) at the super strange tuning of them. He obviously didn't believe what he saw in his measurements. Bottom line of his review was, that he clearly cannot recommend the FT5 and if you accidentally own them, he said that heavily EQing them is absolutely mandatory to get at least a decent curve.
Strange how they so greatly disagree with so many other reviewers.

@droid23 I can confirm that FT5 has a weird tuning which buries its own great technicalities. The mid-bass (~300Hz) bloat is heavily obscuring the treble and even sub-bass. I personally can’t use it for gaming or any other environment where EQ can’t be used. You can check VSG’s measurement on Squiglink, which for me is the most accurate.

Here’s my EQ in case anyone’s curious. FT5 owners can try and start tweaking from there.

Strange how they so greatly disagree with so many other reviewers.

Prime reason why I listen to what they have to say.

Regarding FT5, polarising opinions are by no means infrequent.
