FiiO BTR15 from a Music Producer's perspective
Just got my FiiO BTR15 and call me impressed! How can a 120€ DAC sound almost as good as a 500€ one? As a comparison I have an Antelope Audio Zen Go Sinergy Core Audio interface that sounds as good as 1000€+ DACs. Antelope is industry leading in the sound quality department, along with RME, Universal Audio, among a few others.
BTR15 Balanced (with Dual DAC ON), sounds like anything I've heard below 500€. Soundstage width is very wide, depth is amazing, imaging is not quite "holographic", but engaging, instrument separation is good and detail retrieval is excellent, with refined and airy highs and silky smooth, transparent/clean and romantic vocals. Harmonics, delays and reverbs stand out for a magnificent listening experience.
Antelope Audio Zen Go in comparison sounds a bit more spacious, with a wider soundstage and a bit better definition in the mid and high frequencies. Imaging is a bit more 3D, separation is about the same, and bass is more neutral, less pronounced than FiiO, but still with a great punch. What impressed me the most is that it was not easy to notice these differences from an Audio Interface that sounds like heaven and has a sonic accuracy just found in very expensive DACs.
A reminder that if you use 3.5mm the second DAC will be disabled and with Dual DAC ON on 4.4mm it sounds 50% better than OFF.
I would be perfectly able to use BTR15 as a portable audio interface on the go, even for final mixing and mastering decisions. It is that capable.
Just to finalize, I had Chord Mojo, and while accuracy is excellent, soundstage is below average, it told me nothing, so I sold it next week. Not saying that FiiO BTR15 is better, but the experience is much more immersive and vibrant for me. And that's what music is all about. Having fun.
Have a great day everyone!
EDIT: oh, I've tried FiiO BTR5 before BTR15 and the latest sounds 75% better to my ears. Arrivederci
