if u want ur next phone to be used for music listening(audiophile wise) the iphone is always ur best bet. IT's usually cheapper thant he Android phones, has a better amp and DAC, and the parts are better. LOD can also be used on iOS devices and if you have the cash. the dAC on the iphone/iOS devices can also be bypassed. Most use an ipod classic with this as it has 160GB's but if u just want ur phone to be audiophile capable. the iphone is ur best bet.

Wow, I didn't know all that, thanks! I have an 8G ipod touch so I'm a little more familiar with the functions of iOS than Android, but I've got big hands and I have to say the fit and feel of the Nexus is way more comfy!  I've never really considered my phone as anything more than a convenient audio source as my BB drives my IEM's with acceptable SQ.  I have an old Creative Labs Zen jukebox that has been serving me well on trips for portable audio source, but it's one more thing to carry (plus cables) so as I look to simplify, I'm happy to hear tips like yours re: the iPhone.
 
Got a $500 gift card for the Apple store for xmas, and am kinda waiting to see what the iPhone 5 offers before I decide on that, or getting a 7th gen ipod classic and jumping into the Android side of things for the smartphone (but then again, one more thing to carry!)

Ok this is usually what happens with Head-Fier's:
We get the noobies; they are happy when they learn the ipods they all have is capable of some very good cheap stuff with an LOD
 
Then we get the mid fi'ers who have been here a while, they start thinking non-conventional, non conforming. Want some LEGIT portable music player and start looking at Cowon C2, Hifiman's, rumours on X3(now dead), and other players. Some get it. -nonconforming achieved? Yes
 
Then we get to the hi end audiophiles like Jude himself and most supreme audiophiles(real ones, not just the ones with the post count, you also don't have to know a lot but most do) that spend thousands on their setups and portable ones too. Guess what...the ipod just jumps back up the buy list. $200 for an 160GB ipod with a good UI is very preferable for most high enders. The amp can be bypassed cheaply for $10 from FiiO or expensively from ALO $150. And the DAC can also be bypassed throught eh cypher labs algorythim solo(among a couple more) for $600. 
 
So basically..it's usually a circle. you start off...feel happy u have a good devioce. want soemthing special. and in the end go back to the ipod. this is usually. but if you look at a lot of top tier builds....ipods (classics) are usually there.

LOL.... sounds like life in general, there, and it's exactly why I joined this site - to see what experience had to say rather than trying to reinvent the wheel myself and spending a small fortune along the way.  My wife is already pissed off I'm buying more stuff for my 'expensive' headphones! ("Shouldn't they already work great at $250!?!?!? Why do you need more stuff?")
 
Anyway, I'm glad for the follow-up, as I was wondering what you meant by bypassing the amp cheaply.  I guess that's the cable they sell at Fiio.  I didn't understand which end connected where but if you're bypassing the amp, then the flat portion must hook into the base of the ipod/phone and the analog end into the E17 (or other amp) and not the other way around.

Yes, i recommend either the $8 FiiO L3 or $13 FiiO L9, they use higher quality HPC22W wire than the L1 or other FiiO LOD models. The flat part that looks just like ur charge and data cable on ur ipod plugs directly into where the data cable u have goes the other part(the 3.5mm plug)..as u correctly guessed goes into an amp. or something that has an amp. since ur bypassing the amp in the ipod u have no real "power"(or enough) comming out to drive anything. this is where u plug into the E17 or other devices The fiio's are very popular. most people up to ones that buy $400 headphones use the $13 FiiO LOD

I'm getting in touch with an Android (Linux) kernel builder.
He is trying to fix the missing USB audio issue, but he doesn't promise anything.

Can you plug this into the USB port on your computer to use as a DAC and simultaneously use it as an amplifier, eliminating the E9 from the equation? If not, can you run optical into it from your PC's soundcard and use it as a DAC/Amp simultaneously?

Hey DanBa!  Still loving your avatar, every single time I see it.   How's the E17 working these days with you and your Archos tablet?  I have an Android phone currently (Motorola Photon 4G) and just ordered an E17 yesterday because I needed a more transportable DAC/Amp solution, and I'm wondering if I might be able to pair it with my phone at some point down the road.  I was sort of considering an Android device as a possible laptop replacement at some point later down the road also, but lack of foobar, possibly no ability to pair with my incoming E17 and/or no ridiculous iPad 3 display (rumored though it is at this point) has made me reconsider.  
 
Thanks again for covering the push to get USB DACs supported via Android.  I went and voted for that using the link you provided.

I’m pretty sure that a USB DAC will be a standard USB device able to connect to an Android smartphone/tablet like a USB mass storage device, a USB keyboard or a USB mouse, because the capability is there (i.e. Android kernel = Linux kernel).

From all I've read you should be able to hook the E17 up to your computer via USB cable and have the E17 act as both DAC and amp, and thus eliminate the need for E9.  I think the E9 comes in handy when you have high impedance phones and need a little more push.    I was lucky enough to get the E17 and I use it with my macbook pro, however, I cannot get a digital-only output to the E17 from it.    I am trying to figure out a way to do just that, as my laptop's volume and eq controls directly affect the output, which to me indicates the macbook DAC is in action.  I use the UBS to miniUSB that came with it.  I can't find a function within iTunes or the sound utility (aside from selecting the E17 UBS linkup) that would enable me to switch it to an all digital output.
 
Sorry to answer your question with a question, but I think we're both looking for the same answers!

^^ This is one of the main reasons the E17 appeals to me. Use it as a DAC/Amp on my Windows PC's and standalone with ipod. So far there have been good reviews of the E17 but not much to read from owner's on this forum. What's the story?
