I half-wish I'd tried some Ety earphones as people speak with such affection for them.

Unfortunately, vanity drove me to the nicer-looking E4cs and Etymotic don't really have any phones competing in the same price bracket as the E500s...

Are you kidding me? The Ety signiture red and blue is world famous. I think they are the coolest looking IEM.

ER4S plus a decent portable amp will be as expensive as E500's.
With the right amplification, the sound of the ER4S can really compete with the best of the best in audio reproduction. The low price tag to me is just a downright bargain for the sound you get.

However, without amplification, some tunes can sound bloody shocking.
