ES-R10 closed back dynamic headphone Sony R10 Replica Discussion/Impressions

Was that a reason why you posted about wanting a dark and colorful DAC ?
Partly yes, and for personal preference, I consider "dark" and "color" the ultimate sound.

Neutral and bright sound has seen its days, and now I consider it utterly dull and dismissive. THX "cough."

All anyone need is a $300 monitor headphone to get that neutral sound.

I'm looking for that HE1 romantic sound, aka the ultimate sound.

After years of experimentation, I've found for me that a DAC that is warm of neutral but not overly so (and still technically proficient) paired to a solid state amp that is dynamic, has command of the headphone driver, and linear is my chain preference. Then neutral to bright-neutral headphones that don't have a recessed midrange.

This ES-R10 nails it my my chains and I think the stock cable is a pretty good one. I thought I might buy a silver one but content for now.

Nods. Although you definitely need to try injecting 300B somewhere into the chain. It's mystic, it's magic, it's very real, substantially.

All amps serviced by spritzer.

007mk1 + stock SRM717 combo is an amazing combo. Nothing beats the 717. Its STAXs best amp ever built. Now re-reviewing my take on the OG T2. The 717 was better than it. OG T2 was actually muddy sounding. The only thing it did right was showing the community that a beast can be unleashed if tweaked properly.

Ranking them I list it like this.
717
727 <- you can mod this to sound like a 717
313 <- Simple low version of the 717
006TS <- This is a better version of the T1 series.
T1W
T1S
OG T2

I know its shocking :) And the crazy thing is a stock 717 is better than all those amps and in mod mode its next to carbon and beyond.

The 717 sounds better. No matter what phone you place on the 717 it will sound better. But the 006TS is enough for it. 5 on the volume for the 006TS is all you need.

The 007MK1 is better than the ES-Omega.

Ranking:

007MK1
OG Omega
ES-Omega
009S
009
007MK2
L700

At least its in 3rd place :)
What if you mod a 007mk2 with blu-tack? I think I read it brings it close to 007mk1 level.

@Zoide

The 007A is actually closer to the Mk1 than the 007Mk2 with the blutack.

If anyone wants a 007, people should actually buy the 007A. The 007Mk1 is not a good buy in 2022 to be honest. It has one of the worst build of a headphone and is over 20+ years old.

Would you buy a used 007A in great condition for ~1,300 euros, or a new ES-R10 for ~1,600 euros?

Thanks

Yes, the 007A is my favorite Stax but I did never own or hear an Omega. I have had over the years every 007 variant and the 009.

Interesting. I'm super tempted by the opportunity to get a 007A in excellent condition for ~1,300 euros, but they're notoriously hard to drive and I don't think I could justify to myself (and my wife 😅) spending kilobucks on a "Mafia" amp... (My L700mk1 is paired to a relatively humble SRM-323S)

I guess that's a big advantage of the ES-R10, that they're not such a prima donna when it comes to driving them... 🤔

Nice bass beats right from the start! Loving how deep the R10 hits. And soundstage imaging is top notch. Must agree this closed back wonder challenges even my beloved 800S.
I'm so confused by all the reports of thumping bass, while at the same time the FR chart shows a huge drop below 100 Hz... 🤔

I talked to the maker. He told me alot :)
He also provided me this.
Red line for esr10
Green line for the original (measured -3db)

I asked if it is limited.
His reply, "Yes they are, but it is not intended to be limited but due to limited supply of Japanese zelkova wood and limited stock of drivers. Each of them is serialised "

My L700, which is not exactly known for its impactful bass (at least without blu-tack mod), extends much lower:

Yeah it’s kind of crazy for me to look at those graphs and listen to the ESR10 and L700 side by side. You wouldn’t be able to tell from the graphs but the ESR10 sounds a good deal warmer. That’s with a silver dragon on my R10. Neither is a bass quantity champion but both render “satisfying” levels for my needs, different for sure but both getting the same job done in their own way.

Agreed!

To @Zoide - the ES-R10 is a classic romantic type of sound. Vivid, open, warm, sweet sounding. Some 3D soundstage magic. Not unlike a Koetsu cartridge or classic/vintage tubes. The timbre, probably imparted by the Zelkova wood, is great for this. The L700 has better clarity (especially in a quick swap, this is extremely apparent), speed, extension, and detail. It's more technical than ES-R10 without being as sterile as some of its sibling Staxes can be (at least until you throw extremely expensive amps at them). Which one I prefer here comes down simply to my preferences on that day.

There isn't as much sub-bass, but the bass ~<500hz is at respectable levels, and in comparison with the rest of the spectrum, sounds really solid. I don't believe I said thumping bass, but that the bass is really plentiful and not anaemic by any means.

Been enjoying them so much I haven't even bothered coming into HeadFi or visit Classifieds any longer xD
