ES-R10 closed back dynamic headphone Sony R10 Replica Discussion/Impressions

Awesome info! Thanks for the mini ranking of your Stax amps. I'm surprised the revered OG T2 ranked below everything on your list. Before I got the 717, I had the 007TA tube amp, which didn't have good control of the bass and made it sound soft and flabby. Pretty sweet that a modified 717 can reach the level of the TOTL carbon.

Oh yeah, the 717 has that natural warmness. It pairs very well with bright headphones. ES-Omega has a degree of brightness like the OG-Omega. No sibilance or treble issues.

I got these because I've been looking for another closed back and Audio Technica doesn't want to release their 60th anniversary headphones. Always been interested in the R10 but I did not want to deal with aging drivers and foam, so this is probably the next best option. They took around 2 weeks to arrive to the US with EMS after it shipped so I would recommend DHL if you're in a rush.

Some first impressions on build:
  • Cups are chunkier than I thought, and makes handling them awkward when you're not used to them
  • The finish on the metal is a bit rough when you look at it closely, small flaws present.
  • Headband leather material is around the Fostex headband quality, not great but not awful.
  • Glue smell has been mentioned by other users and it's a bit distracting, hoping that goes away quickly
  • Cups are beautiful :) There was a bit of glue residue on one of my cups

The "chamber" effect is special. I've never encountered anything else like it in the hobby and acoustic music sound wonderful. Very well worth it at the asking price IMHO.

so, i told my friend i ordered the ES R10 and he asked me a question i don't recall seeing an answer to on this thread. The ES R10 is supposed to sound somewhat like the OG Sony, but which one? The bass heavy version or is this ES R10 tuned to sound more like the bass light version of the Sony R10?

I cannot refrain from repeating myself: Thank G-D someone finally had the guts to do this and make a copy of the MDR-R10- the KING of headphones.

Every day, I am shocked at how satisfied I am. Superb detail, magical 3-D chamber soundstage, clear like glass (with a silver headphone cable), euphonic,--- just EXCELLENT!

And- fairly priced. WOW! This is a unique, and extremely pleasant presentation not available in any other headphone in production. It really has no glaring faults. Strong in every area, pleasing to the ear and to the soul.

R10=beauty
TC=beast

Both the best in their respective presentations IMHO.

I gave out the answer here. I am the Sony MDR R10 historian :L3000: You must search for it :p

Also, for others, if you want to be accustom to Sony history read page 1 - https://www.head-fi.org/threads/son...the-legendary-prince-aka-baby-mdr-r10.845464/

A good idea and history of Sony headphones.

For people want to understand the R Series read page 2 - https://www.head-fi.org/threads/son...gendary-prince-aka-baby-mdr-r10.845464/page-2

Once read both pages, especially page 2, you will be 75% master of Sony. The other 25% will be with me :darthsmile: Your welcome.

If the ES-R10 clamping force is too tight and too much squeeze.

Bend the headband. The black band. I did it as you can see it's more circular. Try not to damage it. Just evenly bend all side. From the corners to the middle. Repeat untill its nice and loose and perfect fit.

ES-R10 vs 009/009S

After A/B-ing all three extensively for 5hrs. The ES-R10 is the winner.

ES-R10 has more soul, body. Same resolution, detail as STAX.

The 009s both had better treble, sparkle and somewhat air.

R10 has that hollow arena sound as someone pointed out that makes it having a speical sound point compare to 009s.

So far the R10 is proving not to spend more than $1500 on headphones! 😃 that's the conclusion.

@protoss: Did ES say whether he was ever going to add some polish to the cups? I guess I can use the same beeswax-based wood conditioner that I use on my LCD-2 rev. 1's to keep its wood rings in decent shape (they're notorious for cracking around the connectors).

I only asked him about the side gaps. From my understanding it seems he was not going to prioritize it, but eventually down the road he might. Having the headphones in my hand, he dose not need to polish the gaps. Just leave it be.

I do not think he will polish the cups. There is no need to. I polish mine last week for fun.

Also, the cable connection is reinforced by aluminum plate. No need to ever worry about cracking. Also the cups are OG wood. I never seen a cracked Sony R10s and I seen alot of R10s.

@sennfan83261

Unknown Pleasures got me into punk and post punk. Thanks Ian :)
When I first heard "New Dawn Fade" I blown away and then watching Robert De Niro racing through the highway with a rendition version of it was great.
The ES-R10 sounds great with that album. Puts a lot of soul into it.

I'm assuming, from post above I've missed the boat on these, and the limited availability is over? Was really hyped on these as a closed back compliment to my Susvara, but hear they only accept cc and no PayPal. I have issues with my cc company shutting me down over international big $ items unfortunately. So with that said, if anyone is selling ... Lol let me know :wink:

There's a Paypal option in the checkout page.
