I've had the 990s for a few months now and really like them. But sometimes at work I'd prefer not to let my music our or others music in, so I'd like to find a pair of closed back phones that are at least on par with these. I should mention that I have a pair of DT770 PRO 600Ω (the pre-2000s discontinued model). While those sound very accurate, the bass is noticeably quieter than the 990s and I prefer the 990 level. Do the newer 770 models improve on bass enough to come close to the 990s? Some recommendations I've read include the ATH-M50 and K271mkII. I'm not inclinded to go with Senn's because I already go through a tube headphone amp, and things might get a bit too warm sounding for my taste. But maybe I'm wrong.

For music, I mostly listen to electronica, indie pop/rock, a little jazz, and a dash of classical. I am open to brands outside beyerdynamic, but one thing is a must: comfort. Your thoughts are welcomed.

^ Should be some good info for you there. I'm pretty sure the current DT 770/80 Pro is the bassiest of current Beyers.

I just listened to Master of Puppets on the M50s and my arm hair was head banging.

Had the Millet Minimax up to K701/DT-990 600 volume levels and the M50s didn't distort 1 bit (amazing for a non amp required can)

Need to Q-tip out the blood and give the good ol ears a breather now!

Is that the doorbell ringing?

I have listened to the DT990 250 Ohms before and i dare say that they are really bass light in my opinion. The DT770 Pro 250 Ohms [which is what i own right now] has a lot of bass but it doesnt overpower the mids and highs. But i think though, the best thing to do is to audition them yourself [obviously :p]

Sorry to bump a very old thread but I'm current in the exact same situation. I bought DT990 - 250 Ohms (my first ever expensive headphones) and though I REALLY like them, I have been overly annoyed by the amount of sound leak. No moderate volume I can almost hear the songs across the room.

I bought these mostly for 60% gaming and 40% music. I listen to all type of music from heavy metal to country and enjoy bass. What would be a good alternative to DT990 with closed back (around same impedance) ?

I have a recent (bought in 2011) DT770 Pro 250 Ohm, and it does not have a huge amount of bass, but it is more than neutral below 150 Hz (especially at 35-50 Hz), and it extends quite well. This is basically the closed version of the DT990 Pro, but without the large mid-bass hump. Does your 600 Ohm DT770 have the bass ports (allegedly, some versions do not) ? Also, if it is very old, the worn ear pads could be responsible for some loss of bass.

Can anyone please suggest something? What about the HD25-1 II or the DT1350?

The D2000 sounds very similar to the DT990 and it is closed. The D5000 is warmer and bassier yet, though the bass is pretty bloated and not too well controlled.
