He modded the external box to use an external power supply, which he then plugs into power conditioning.

That initally excited me about the 1820m, but the raw performance of the unmodded RME HDSP has me thinking inside the box now.

so, the buttom line is that the 1212M (in this case 1820M wich suppose to have the same sound quality as the 1212M. isn't it?) isn't much better the 0404. 10% improvment?

Just new caps for now. It takes a while to burn in and I like to do only one thing at a time to quantify any changes. I use the CAT6 cable also.

I've never heard a 1212m and my 1820m isn't stock so can't really say for sure. 0404 also uses an AKM DAC which has a different flavor than Crystal one so it's not only a performance difference.

lan would you consider lending your 0404 to someone with the stock 1212m (or someone who's familiar with it, such as IronDreamer) for the benefit of the community? Or vice versa... anyone with a stock 1212m mind lending it to lan for a week? We'd love to know if the 1212m has much better analog output than the 0404!

You mean if the EMU0404's analog output is anywhere as good as the EMU1212's analog output. If it's 98% of what the EMU1212 can give you, I'd buy one today and get over my conundrum over which interface to go for ...

It makes more sense to send a 1212m to me because the comparision would be done in the same environment. If anybody is game for this, cool. I'd compare the digital outputs also.

From the photo, I notice E-MU0404 using AK4395 DAC which is the top product from AKM. It is supposed to support 24/192, then why E-MU0404 only
give out 24/96. Any comments?

Well it would be the "same environment" regardless. But do we have anyone willing to ship lan their 1212m for comparision? A lot of us have been holding back on making another soundcard purchase because of the 0404.
