In my eyes I am the most fervent Empyrean Fan here on head-fi, and while I'd like to audition thr D8000 some time, I rather spend my money on the Empyrean Elite.
I see no reason to be concerned.
They just need to keep that general tone of the Empyrean and add a little more Finesse to it, then they might even convince the current naysayers.

Even with the information we yet have we cannot answer unless having listened sidebyside.
Everything else is just speculation based on the product specs and marketing statements
I won't expect Elite to best TC in TC's superior feature areas.
We should take these cans for their specific strengths.
I am looking for an Elite because of the same attributes Empyrean standard is known for but I am also looking for a TC - one day for its vast loudspeaker stage, speed, clarity and bass impact.

I don't expect Elite to disappoint me in that regards
Despite my penchant for closed-back headphones, the Empyrean remains my top choice for an open can. Its sound is sufficiently warm, lush and inviting; in tandem with its oh-so-wonderful levels of comfort and its top-grade looks, the (current) Meze flagship is my runaway favorite within the open-back space.
In fact, I was really close to purchasing an Empyrean; with the imminent release of a successor, though, I will take a wait-and-see approach.
