I'm on the fence between Zeus-r and A12. My source will be ibasso dx90. Has anyone had an issue with hiss with a Zeus/dx90 pair?

I don't have DX90, but you do realize Z-R and A12 have totally different signature?  Plus, if you are planning to order A12, you are no longer getting the original ADEL module.

I realize the Zeus now comes with apex. I am less clear on the sound signatures. I'll never be able to audition either until it arrives on my doorstep with my name on its case.

Uh what?  You mean A12 comes with APEX, not Zeus-R

Regarding hiss, below are some of my DAP-Zeus pairings:

FiiO X1 > Zeus = hiss
FiiO X1 > FiiO E12A > Zeus = no hiss on low gain, hiss on high gain

Colorfly C3 > Zeus = hiss

AK Jr > Zeus = no hiss

Thanks a lot guys. Now I am asking myself if I don't prefer the former Zeus. Along the lines of what Nick said on the subject. The R is more balances and clear, but the XIV had this magic no other iem has.

What is the difference between the R and XIV? I'm getting one to pair with Cowon P1.

How do Zeus-r and A12 sound signatures differ?

owned u12 and now i own zeus r

zeus r sounds more life like more energetic and got all spectrum right, U12 was great as well but falls behind and feels less life like

Which ADEL module did you use when you had the U12?  The B1 really brings out the sparkles on the U12.
