Electrodynamic and electrostatic headphones now obsolete ?
Dec 16, 2013 at 4:26 AM Post #76 of 115
Recently, I was asked (indirectly) on HCFR if I was, ultimately, disappointed by my 009 and now embittered since marketing of the Abyss ?
http://www.homecinema-fr.com/forum/post177912945.html#p177912945 (in french)

The answer is clearly no ; I love my 009 and his listening is always great.

As to the use of a subwoofer to try to have for super bass striking, the answer is no ; the 009 (with a good amp) does not need to the subwoofer smeared the bass of the 009 (very clean for the Stax).

As for buying one day Abyss? The answer is clearly no, because it is too expensive, too ugly, and poorly adapted to the size of the heads ; unlike some who have "little heads", I rather have a "big head" ; no one is perfect in this world

, nor even a headphone as expensive and innovative that it is ......

Arnaud, on HCFR, tries to express his doubts about the unconventional Abyss (which largely defy the laws of physics, or at least those of others Orthos), but the "french sect" pro Abyss on the Abyss thread of HCFR always resist, against all odds.

Who will be the next convert ?

Unless planar magnetic headphones can be made a lot lighter, they aren't going to be a real winner, IMO.  I even convert a pair of planar magnetic headphones into electrostatic and they sound amazingly good.

Following of the events on HCFR : the Abyss of Pierre Paya will be lended and tested soon  for another member of the french forum ; it will be, this time, compared to an modified HE-500 (improved) and measured, especially in comparison to the HE-500 headphone ; research correlation measurement / listening will be tempted by the experimenter not yet adept to the inconditional French group of listening Abyss.

PS : for information : price of HE-500 is $699 ; Price of Abyss (in France) is  6,000 €

A-t-on une petite idée du nombre de casques Abyss produit par JPS Lab (et acheté) dans le monde depuis la commercialisation de ce casque ?

Translation (Google Translate) :
A Will is a small idea of how many helmets Abyss produced by JPS Lab (and bought) in the world since the commercialization of this helmet?

Improved translation:
Can we have an idea of the number of Abyss headphones produced by JPS Lab (and bought) in the world since marketing of this headphone ?

I'm sure anyone who wants to know what's going on at HCFR can just visit there using google translate or the like.  We do not need a play-by-play on HF, seriously.

  Sorry.
In the background you're right, I'm a very bad commentator and especially poor translator. Do not hesitate to use GoogleTranslate (or other) if you're interested.

I don't visit the HCFR site much and therefore appreciate the occasional links to the highlights there. I can only read french, and even then not that well; so Eric's pointing out of specific posts is actually helpful to me.

The Google Translation of "Abyss headphone" to "Abyss helmet" is indeed correct.

In the ranking of David Mahler "Battle Of The Flagships ... " http://www.head-fi.org/t/634201/battle-of-the-flagships-58-headphones-compared-update-audeze-lcd-2-revision-2-6-4-13, some headphones have flavors (or color) chocolate, others vanilla  ...

How should we situate the Abyss compared to all these flavors, and overall ranking that can be expected, according to criteria specific of comparisons (with strengths and weaknesses) as established rigorously by David Mahler.

The Abyss deserves its place in the top 10, or even better?

This is my question.
