That is your real concern!  Understandably so!

Is this really the intent of a 'monitor' or a problem w/ the crossover inadequately handling the multiple drivers??

I disagree that the e-Q7 has better sense of music, atmosphere, emotions, etc, and think the sounds are actually in the proper spots.  The difference in spacing between the two really depends on the track (how it was originally recorded), and the SM3 can do things the e-Q7 can not as far as width and placement.  Again, not that the e-Q7 is bad, but the SM3 just gets it right to my ears.  KLS may also chime in with his thoughts.

First I have to clarify that although we agree to some extent, I don't think that I am hearing exacly the same how @average_joe hears SM3. Because @avergae_joe is using better tips, and I am using stock tips. @average_joe is so generous that he sent me some Sensorcom tips, while I like those tips my SM3 has broken so I didn't spend much time with them.

Okay, I sent out my SM3 today, for repair. And there was much space left inside the parcel carrying SM3, so I throw in a pair of ear impressions.  And I have sold my e-Q7 :)

Now I don't have them in my hands.

I was using stock tips with my SM3 when I did my comparison between SM3 and e-Q7.

SM3 with stock tips compared to e-Q7 with Sony hybrids, all based on memory:
  1. SM3 is a little bit veiled in the midrange, as compared to e-Q7.
  2. Instrument separation is better on SM3. By the way, I don't really think that e-Q7 has good instrument separation.
  3. Vocals, especially female vocals on e-Q7 is magical, and actually in some sense, more musical. I really like female vocals on e-Q7. Vocals on SM3 is more accurate, natural, has a fuller body, and warmer.
  4. SM3 has more bass qunatity compared to e-Q7.
  5. SM3 has a more laid back treble compared to e-Q7.

As for bass and treble, I don't dare to comment much, as I don't have a strong audio memory and I am getting used to Radius DDM :) Actually I double check by listening to the phones when I write comparison. Since they are not with me anymore, ...The points above are those that strike me the most when I compared the two of them.

I think I shall refrain from commenting further until I get back my SM3 and try them with some Monster triple flanges :)

Lucozade.......In the UK is your cat grey or gray?.. I know it's off topic, but in the States both spellings are acceptable, and almost evenly split. The issue has been debated in spelling bees.
