EarSonics SM3 Appreciation, Discussion, & Review Thread - Technically Best Universal? (see first post for reviews and info)

They sound basically the same as any other MP3 player in a volume-matched AB test (Sansa Clip, Hifiman, etc). In RMAA tests they also "look" the same as most other players - almost all players roll off the bass with low-impedance phones. The good thing about Cowon players is their BBE sound enhancements, which are for many people the best you can get in the portable market (YMMV, of course). While they're nothing special played "flat", same as other players, they can sound really nice with their EQ and enhancements.

However, if your headphones have a high impedance, then things balance out, the bass won't roll off as much and the rather loud headphone out of the Cowon S9 will be of very good use compared to quieter players.

Using an amp will solve the bass roll off issue in most cases.

Also, the Mach3Bass setting, although not a complete solution to that problem, is still very useful since it raises the frequencies around 60 - 80 hz - precisely where the roll off usually start with lower impedance headphones. But it won't do justice to even lower frequencies. Still, you'll get that rythmic bass section that's usually lacking because of the roll off issue.

But in the end there are other things under the label "sound quality". For instance, the Cowon S9 seems to handle dynamics very well. It's also got a rather liquid presentation - something I personally value, and of course those BBE enhancements, which are not that well considered by purists but which can, if used very moderately, give you the little difference here and there you missed on other sources. It sill is a very good player, and I feel it's actually a great one with higher impedance portable phones (Shure SRH840 for instance, even though I feel they still benefit from amping).

Thanks this clarified a lot.

Pretty true, however, I found with trance that the combination of lowΩ earphones, bass roll off and the pretty narrow channel separation gave me headaches. I sold my D2 after finding a player that could do one of those three things right. Basically the same is right, but that little bit of extra nastiness gone was all it took for me to ditch the Cowon. They are made well and look good, but I'd not buy another.

Small bit of advice really.  I am using my SM3s with an ALO Jumbo Cryo and a Hornet M.  I was just wondering if anyone else has this combination or could give me advice on the best gain setting for these IEMs.  I tend to use Low.

And on a different note, I do find it funny that there are a few people that seem to not believe that the SM3 is special and different and take shots in other threads at me.  But whatever, their loss!

@ average joe,

The longer i have the sm3 in my ears the more i like them, the hole spectrum of sound is very nice but the midrange and treble for me is where these really shine, they are like sweet liquid honey flowing smooth and pure out of an expansive three dimensional soundscape  which is very inticing and addictive indeed

As much as I prefer open headphones, the SM3s pulled off De La Soul - De La Soul is Dead pretty well. The Chopin which came before it was not so natural..

That's the best thing I have to say about IEMs at the moment

Why bother picking on your SE420's  After all, they are first on your iem list, taunting me, and forcing me to admit they reign supreme over all others. My sorry ears could not deal with the supreme cohesive balance, huge soundstage, deep articulate bass, or the sparkly but never harsh highs. I simply don't have the ability to discern all the seperation and micro detail they offer either. They are so good, my mind and ears just can't put it all together.......ok, I think that's a bit much

Yes indeed, and being the generous bloke that I am, I'm willing to ship you a brand new in the box set of SE420's for the lousiest pair of phones you own (SM3) and don't feel bad, I really don't  mind.
just think..it would equate into a four driver iem, if  you stuck both pairs in your ears at once......aaahhhhh, the sonic bliss.....It's ok, really.I'll do without, and let you have all the glory.  NIRVANA
OH, and in a pinch, both cats could each listen to a pair while you sleep.
