Flashed to 2.20L0..

Felt it's more dynamics and a lot of nuances that is produced. Bass is more taut ( less bloom ).
Sound is more forward as what most ppl already observed. Will be sticking to this firmware.

I think Paul should raise 10% of the SRP after this firmware is released. J/K :)

Ah. I don't disagree that there is improved separation and a slight increase in soundstage. It was definitely an improved sound, and speaking from an audiophile point of view, it was better (technically). But somehow I just preferred 2.1.8's presentation. The whole feeling into the music cliché here on headfi. YMMV. haha. really depends on preferences.

I saved all the firmwares from 2.1.5 onward so I might give 2.2.0 another shot when I'm freer. Haha.

Btw, thank you Lurker for your great work. Really love the Roboto font. It makes our DAPs look a little classier.

For those who curious about how sharp/slow roll-of works... or does not!

Well, you need to have headphones and ears to hear high frequencies
smily_headphones1.gif
Download "Mosquito Tone 2 (Modulated)" from here. With 2.2.0, play it and switch between sharp and slow settings while it is playing. Do you hear any difference? If you don't hear a difference, or just hear nothing, then, probably, you should not bother about this setting at all.

Now, if you hear the difference, leave it at slow, and allow to play to the end. Press "Play" button to start it again. Note, that the sound is the same.

Install 2.1.5 (2.1.8 is unable to play this file!), play that file and ensure that you still hear the difference. Then let it stop with slow, and play it again. Note, that now it sounds like with sharp value. That effectively means that before 2.1.8, the setting worked only for the first played track, and now the bug has been fixed. My sorrow to those who thought that slow sounds better for him before FW 2.1.8

Well, but what does cause the difference? The simple is: distortions, parasitic sounds that should be filtered off.

So, if you still wonder what setting is the really best, my answr is: the best is to use hi-res records, because for them the filter works in ultra-sonic area, and the setting does not really matter

tried this test on my dunu 2000 ... with sharp roll off I was barely able to hear very little of the sound at very high volume levels, once I switched to slow setting I can hear the sound with not much volume on my DX.

So what  I am hearing with slow roll off is that pasrasitic sounds that need to be filtered? should I be using Sharp roll off then to filter those?

thanks for your fw's Lurker0

2.2 is the most neutral and balanced firmware to date imo, it is less forward than 2.1.5 throughout parts of frequency spectrum and is more linear and flat to my ears, which has created a more neutral and refined sound, but also lessened "energy", timbre detail is better heard, and depth and imaging are improved. So basically 2.2 has smoother and more neutral treble presentation than 2.1.5L, and more resolution is heard. 2.2 also has less bass bloat than all previous firmwares, sub bass extension is still as good as ever, but it is not forward now, I actually hear more detail in the bass of 2.2. The sharp filter is actually useful now, in previous firmwares the sharp filter never sounded right to me, now it actually sounds decent, although slow is still my preference. If you want a more energetic sound then 2.2 might be lacking. Personally I wouldn't mind a slightly more forward sound myself.

For me 2.2 is the most technically capable firmware to date, but might not be everyone's favorite. Neutral sound has always been a controversial matter, most people would take a colored sound over a neutral one. 2.1.8 sounds like a more colored version of 2.2 imo.

+1!

Exactly what I hear from the new firmware too!

I created an account just to confirm this (I only used to read the comments and search for FW impressions)

Just updated to 2.2L0 and man, Ive melted!
rolleyes.gif

Using my Westones W40 with 2.1.5L2 (Mid Gain/Slow Roll Off) I felted that the bass bleeded too much, and a bit grainy on the hi's. With my Brainwavz B2 was more analitical, but a bit too harsh, to the point i got fatigued after an hour of constant listening.

For me, balanced sound it's a MUST, cause im also analizing mastering/mixing properties of songs.

Tryed the 2.2L0 FW with my W40 (Low Gain/Slow Roll Off), and thats IT! all i ever wanted, the balance between a linear sound, a superb musical experience, a nice soundstage and a great detail and smoothness!

Great job iBasso!

PD: any ideas of what Paul meant by "additional support on M3U playlists", any detail on that?

My hat off to Ibasso!
Am enjoying 2.2.0L0 a lot, so far no unwanted restarts also, seems Ibasso has done a fine job. DX90´s will stay with me now.

Yeah... I skipped 2.1.8 as well... too much grousing about it. Figured I'd wait.
Newest Lurker0 FW seems to work just fine.

Sounds great, and I know there is no freakin' way in heck that I'd be able to tell you about any differences between the two... unless I AxB'd them on two different units and really looked for differences.
They may be there... but I don't hear anything radically different enough to make any comment one way or another.

2.2.0 is amazing. It's musical, analytical, has better seperation( than 2.1.8) and fantastic mids( not too much)
I think its a marriage between 2.1.5 and 2.1.8
2.1.5 is analytical but lifeless
2.1.8 is energetic but the mid is too hot; as well as hot bass (for Hifiman re600 at least)

Good job IBasso!

I'm in love with listening to music again :)

BTW: I just got the Anker 4400 mah batteries; get it guys, dx90 sounds more powerful and clean, a veil lifted compared to Pisen original batteries

Are you referring to this Anker 4400 mah batteries from this link http://www.amazon.com/Warranty-Replacement-Extended-GT-I9300-EB-L1G6LLU/dp/B008TLQ5RY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1429577075&sr=8-2&keywords=Anker+4400+mah

Doesn't look like it will fit the DX90.

FrancisK,

yes thats the one I bought; the only thing is it seems to be a bit hot, im using dx90 with cayin c 5, maybe thats why its hot.

Cayin its a good musical amp, i'm listening now with zero audio doppio. It sounds amazing.

Usually Doppio sound polite, sterile with 2.1.5 but now it ( 2.1.8 + Anker 4400 mah) it sounds powerful, with good bass, like a powerful stallion running out of the stall.

Power under control

I need to listen witn Hifiman Re600 and Fx850, but am having too much fun :)
