DUNU DN-2000J -- More Than Evolution?

  How do you compare this (at least the last prototype you've heard) to Fidue A83? Maybe a bit too premature, but I'd love to hear the rough estimate.

The two are very different in terms of tone and flavor. Personally, I didn't like the A83; to me, it was muffled, lacking upper midrange, and not very spacious sounding. Also, the bass bloat was only controlled by the AK240 (don't know why, not an AK240 fanboy at all, closer to an AK240 hater, but the AK240 works well with the A83). So to my ears, I think the 2000J is better, but that's me. I can understand why some would prefer the A83 sound, as the two really are pretty different.

Definitely DN-2000J comparison to the DN-2000. I wish the bass could be more, either more emphasis on sub-bass or more mid-bass.

Have not listened to it yet.

Dates for worldwide availability are not yet set --- this is only the pilot run; however, expect the retail price to be between $350 to $400 USD, leaning closer to the former. Exact MSRP is not set.

For DUNU, they regard the product as separate from the DN-2000, but because they applied for "high-red" certification from Japan with the 2000J name and renaming the product would mean completely reapplying for certification, the name has stuck.

I don't know what to expect from the final tuning. The reps themselves haven't even heard it.

I think the grey tips are the stock ones from the DN-2000, while the white ones are new. They feel less thick in density. Have not had a chance to compare yet.

As for first impressions, I can say that this final iteration is fairly different from the prototype I last heard, so I'm still trying to get a handle over it. It seems to be more well-rounded overall, rather than only going for absolute treble extension. It doesn't quite sound like the K3003 anymore, but that's not a bad thing. I am still darn impressed. That's pretty much all I'm able to say for now.

Getting into the "new toy syndrome" phase right now, so I'm going to go out of my way not to use hyperbole...
 
A few points of note:

• They made the right call including Comply foams (there is one pair of T/Tx/Ts, each in 500 diameter size) --- my favorite is (and always will be, because of my ear canal shape) the Ts version. Users will definitely be tip rolling just to get different flavors and feels out of the 2000J --- some may settle on the stock silicone, others third party tips, and still others the Comply tips. I don't foresee any one tip becoming the consensus "best tip" for the 2000J.
• The sound signature is still similar to what DUNU has been doing for the last year and half or so, just improved upon? I can hear they've reflected changes mainly
• Initially, upon hearing the bass response of the prototype, I thought some people would end up complaining about bass impact and slam (not me). I doubt most head-fiers will complain for this final version. I have not tried the bass ring thingy, but I don't really feel the need to. For you guys, I will, though.
• For people who wish to mod the DN-2000J, the green damper is visible through the outer metal screen.
• Soundstage is not exceedingly large, but there's plenty of space to go around, and is tip-dependent. Some tips enhance center image size and projection, while others help with absolute width.
• In many ways, the DN-2000J is like a chameleon; change a tip, and it sounds quite different. The overall timbre is neither BA nor dynamic; it's unlike other hybrids, where I can hear where one type of transducer takes over. There are are some choice places where I can say, "oh that's definitely BA, or only a dynamic can do that", but it's far less than other models.

How are the mids on DN-2000J? Are they thin like the prototype or lush like the DN-2000?

Neither? It has enough weight not to sound anemic, but it's not super lush. For the record, I've never believed the DN-2000 was ever especially lush.

Yes, DN2000 midrange leans toward thin sounding but keeps the timbre acceptable for my personal standards.
