Few choices you should read up on: (i havent tried any of these  except the hfi 580s, which i loved ._., and the dt770s, also loved. but im going off of the general consensus for these)

200-300$ (street price, atleast)

Ultrasone pro 900 (best choice for quick, slamming bass. Harsh highs)
Denon ah-d2000 (Best choice for deep sub bass, Not TONS i have heard though.)
Vmoda M100(good middle ground in terms of sub and bass. Plus stylish ^.^)

100-200$

Ultrasone HFI 580(Best choice for clarity and speed. Wonderful for fast dubstep and dnb.)
M-Audio Q40 (best choice for bass)
Beyer DT-770 pro(best choice for soundstage along with bass, better for things like trance, melodic dubstep ect)

The dt770 (especially the higher ohm versions) and pro 900 both benefit HIGHLY from proper amping. i advise not to add to the total cost as you can always get an amp later.

The D2000 was discontinued a few years ago and even when they weren't they went for $350, which is out of his range.

Just saw the one for 330$ and assumed there would be more. Like on headfi, craigslist, ebay, ect.

You might want to tell him that that's the price for a used pair (some people are opposed to that kind of thing).

Most people agree that d-600 is better than d2000, I just paid $240 for a new pair anyway. I'd reccomend them, except they're pretty huge.

That depends on the application, the D2000 is a more neutral headphone So technically it is a better headphone. When considering EDM and movies, I would agree with your statement.
