Hi currently running the RCA 5U4G tube and thinking of upgrading it. Would the Raytheon Rk60/1641 be a upgrade?

Which RCA are you running? The older ones typically sound a little better.

Do you know if the RCA Victor tubes are older than the old logo RCA?

I've seen some RCA Victor tubes which I think were as old as 1940.

I don't have the 5u4g, but the 5v4g, and it is pretty sweet. There are some nice looking smooth plate 5y3 Victors which I think are from 1940s

I was surprised as I associated the Victor with JVC , so was interesting to read the history of it all

I think so. I go by the internal structures. Look for a 5u4g with the two supporting rods between the plates.

Went ahead and ordered the Raytheon RK-60/1641 Tubes [1 pair + adapters] to compare with the RCA 5U4G. Should be here tomorrow and hoping they sound good with the MP 701 MK2.
Here is a picture of the RCA 5U4G and one of the Raytheon RK-60/1641

I would not consider the 1641 to be an upgrade. Rather, it is equally good, but different. It boils down to synergy. With some drivers/output tubes and headphones you may well prefer the RCA. And with other combinations, you may well prefer the Raytheons. Enjoy. :)

Good point and one of the reasons I love this hobby. Can mix match tubes, capacitors, eartips and cables to fine tune the sound to what sounds best to the individuals level of sonic enjoyment. Plus if tired of the sound you can just switch out these components without investing in new equipment.

Has anyone compared the Mullard GZ34 with the Elrog 274b? Trying to work out whether there is a reasonable increase in performance with the Elrog 274b or whether a Mullard GZ34 fatbase maybe a better option. Cheers

I would rather go with the ER5U4G instead of the 274B (to thin and narrow)

Not an option in this instance. The ER5U4G is 5v & 3a and while the 274b is 5v 2a which matches the transformer in my amp.

Ahh, I see thats too bad, my Amp (Woo Audio WA6 SE) can handle both.

So all 5U4G are not sutable?

Correct 👍🏻 Just those with a 5v 2a rating. 5ar4/gz34, 5R4, 5V4/GZ32 and 274b etc

I have not run the Mullard GZ34 (which I understand is an excellent tube). I tried Elrog 274B's in my Woo WA5-LE and it didn't like them (popped one nearly instantly). The Elrog 5U4G are spectacular, though. In your amp, they should work just fine. Thomas (Elrog) can give you some guidance. I have found that the Elrogs in general are incredibly stout and there is no tube sag at all in mine. Been running them for more than a year now - and have no reason to change....
