I currently have some DT770 80 ohm cans, but now I'm looking for some semi/open cans.

I've read that the 880 and 990 sound similar. The 990 being a little more bass heavy.

I listen to a wide variety of genres. From alternative rock to hip-hop to house to pop to reggae.

Given that I have the 770 already, which I find to be bass heavy, which would be the more appropriate set to go with next? I figure I can use the 770 for hip-hop and even house where bass is important to me. Will the 880 or 990 compliment my 770 better? I don't want to buy something too similar to what I already have...

It seems the 990 600 ohm are cheaper than the 880 ohm, but barely. Price is not a deal breaker between the two for me.

Whichever I get, it will be used with a Maverick D1 (just ordered it this morning).

Thanks for any insight!

I think the DT880 would be a better choice. The DT990 IMO is very bassy. More bassy IMO than your DT770. The DT880 with be more balanced and neutral.

Yah, that's what I've been leaning toward. Just wanted some confirmation.

I'm also having second thoughts on the 600 ohm. I've read that the 600 is smoother than the 250, but is harder to drive (obviously). I'll be using sticktly a Maverick D1 for quite some time, until I can afford a good tube amp like the WA6. But given my nature of habit (I get bored easily and move from hobby to hobby quickly), I may not be as interested in audio a few months from now...and may not want to invest in a tube amp. So if the D1 isn't strong enough to drive the 880/600 by itself, I think I'll be better off with the 880/250. If, however, the D1 can drive the 880/600 adequately and only get better with a tube amp, then I'll stick with the 880/600.

FWIW, and if it helps, here is some info on the D1.

Any thoughts on if I should go with the 250 or 600?

Always opt for a 600ohm Beyerdynamic headphone.

Some will not agree, but it is my personal opinion.

Well I had the DT990/600s for a brief time with my D1, and I was underwhelmed. They got loud enough, but felt very underdriven and weak at the same time. It wasn't a whole lot better than when I tried them out of my uDac. I would definitely go for the 250 ohm or better yet the 32 ohm (they sound closer to the 600 ohm than the 250), and I would hope for a much greater outcome with those pairings. If you get the 600 ohm version, I think you will be comtemplating a new amp before you know it! My two cents.
